Who Wins The Battle: Facebook On Numbers But Twitter On Active Users [Study]

0

Competition between social media giants Facebook and Twitter has been an interesting trend to monitor. Both try to supersede each other by either launching new features or by awards. Few weeks back, Facebook introduced few new features – “Subscribe Button”“People Talking About”“Smart Friend List” as well as “Advanced News Feed”. Where as Twitter came up with – “Five Languages Tweet”, “Tweet Speaker”, “Apple’s iOS5”. Also, it has been only 2 days for Twitter  to toppled over Facebook  as “Best Social Networking Site of 2011” – in an Award Ceremony, organized by T3.

A Recent study by Localytics states that 20% of mobile Apps have either Facebook or Twitter amalgamation. However, maximum online publishers have chosen Facebook as preferred social media integration above than Twitter.

It was concluded that 10 out of these 20 percent developers are connected with Facebook, 9 percent connect to both Facebook and Twitter where as only 1 percent is directly connected to Twitter.

Sharing events (defined as sharing, liking or following) on Facebook is twice than  Twitter due to user counts. Facebook has more than 800 million users compared to Twitter’s 200 million.

But when it comes to traffic referral from social media, Twitter users topple over Facebook as Twitter users drives three times more traffic on an average than Facebook users.

Whereas In event generation, Twitter generates 50 events per 1,000 users as compared to Facebook 11 events per 1,000 users.

This shows that how Twitter is slowly gearing up for head-to-head with Facebook in actual traffic generation. It would be interesting to make a remark that a huge number of users on any social networking sites are marketers and handles the networks only for content reference and marketing. Despite of being low on number of users, Twitter still holds the bow to kill.

The Study was conducted on thousands of Android, iPhone, iPad, Blackberry and Windows Phone 7 apps. In addition several videos, articles, Facebook likes as well as Tweets were also taken in view to make date more accurate. Moe than 500 active users were approached to conduct the study between January 2011 to July 2011.

Hope we will come across these type of competition more and more in coming days.

Intel Ditches Smart TV: Shifts Focus Towards Ultrabooks, Smartphones And Tablets

0

Apple’s all latest innovations have triggered the rapid competition in chip manufacturing industry. Now, chip design companies are concentrating more on Ulatrabook (thin laptops) and Smartphone chips rather than traditional desktop PCs and Smart TVs. They are focusing more on designing chips which consume less power and have high-efficiency rate. Intel is one of the renowned names in Chip industry. Today Intel has announced that it is dropping out its smart TV initiative in order to put more and more resources into its “top corporate imperatives”.

“As you can imagine, this was a tough decision – Intel led the creation and launch of the smart TV category and its first products. But, these collective actions will help to ensure that Intel has the best people focused on top business priorities,” a company spokeswoman said.

Intel had designed the chip for Smart TV, called as Digital Home Group, which is accountable for the consumer electronic version of the Atom SoC family. Boxee Box and Google TV, launched last year, are based on DHG’s CE4100 Atom SoC.

However, company will recuperate its operation in digital TV market and the members who were working on designing chips for digital TV will now concentrate on making chips for Ultrabook and smartphones. In May this year, Company  announced that, in 2012, 40% of laptops will be Ultrabook and it’s planning to make a chip which consumes 15 watt power.

It’s interesting that Intel will make chips for consumer electronics market. But company will focused mainly on gateway and internet protocol set – top boxes.

Intel says “There is a ton of synergy between tablets and TVs and so the consumer electronics business within Intel will now be folded into the tablet division, headed by Doug Davis”.

At present Intel designs various consumer electronics chips which consist of:

  • system-on-chips for IP set-top boxes;
  • chips for cable modems;
  • cable gateways;
  • fiber-to-the-home gateways;
  • retail IP gateways;
  • Multimedia terminal adapters.

It’s a sad new for consumers who want to purchase Smart TV, but in another way it’s also good news since Intel will now design chip for next generation Ultrabook and smartphones. Let’s hope Intel will go further and further and provide us the best chips in future.

What do you think about Intel’s latest move. will it pay off and company has chosen slippery road ? Do let us know your views.

Twitter Honored As “Digital Service Of The Year” At T3 Award

4

The year 2011 has proved to be a best year for Micro-Blogging site Twitter. Earlier, it has been forecasted that, in 2011, Twitter’s revenue will touch $139.5 million – a rise of 210% compared $45 million in 2010. Last night, Company has been honored as the Best social media site of 2011 at T3 awards. Twitter beat out its other strong contenders, Facebook and YouTube, to topple at T3 awards. The ceremony was held at London and was loaded with famous personalities of digital gadgetry. The award is an honorable recognition in tech world and it selects the best among all division of tech.

It was a tough competition for Twitter in the presence of social media titan Facebook, online video supreme YouTube, Emperor of online music world Spotify, Sky Anytime+, BBC iPlayer and Google Docs. But at last it proved that simplicity is the best as Twitter’s website is the simplest among all and it’s easy for people to send message on micro-blogging site in few seconds.

Twitter will now be honorific as “Digital Service of the Year”. There are few aspects which helped company to grab the award:

  • Android App.
  • iPad App.
  • iPhone App.
  • It’s political impact as well as website use as a news service.

Below citation by Lauren Dugan editor of AllTwitter provides a clear view why Twitter ought to have this award:

“…And speaking of riots, meet the other media villain of the piece. Twitter has had an incredible year, taken a lot of flak and facilitated a lot of great things – and some terrible ones, granted. At its heart lies, as ever, the purity of truncated expression. Composing a great Tweet is like writing a haiku or sonnet; economy and attention to language and nuance are everything. For keeping you up to date with the lives of others, nothing beats it, but as the Arab Spring proved, it’s also a communications tool that dictators genuinely fear.”

More than 600 members of tech and gadgets industry were invited by T3 committee for this award ceremony. Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook, was awarded as “Tech Personality of the Year”.

The selections of the nominees for the awards were chosen by the judges’ panel and they also selected the winner of each category. T3 also invited their readers to cast their votes to help judges and based on the voting winners were chosen. Around 950,000 votes were casted by the readers to choose the winner.

Let’s hope that Twitter will continue its growth and success in the same fashion for coming years. This may get few more recognition in next few years.

Social Media Industry Revenue Is Expected To Touch $14.9 Billion By 2012 [Study]

2

Worldwide social media is riding on bull, their revenue is increasing by an exponential rate year-on-year. Recently, social media giant Facebook has recorded $1.8 billion as revenue in first half of the year, which is expected to grow to $4.64 billion by year-end. Where as micro-blogging site Twitter has reported to expect revenue of $139.5 million by the end of this fiscal.

In 2010  Facebook managed to secure $2 billion as revenue which is expected to be more than double this year. However, Micro – blogging site Twitter’s revenue is expected to make a bullish jump of 210% compare to last year, which was $45 million only.

Recent study by Gartner suggests that in 2010 social media industry’s overall revenue will settle down around $10.3 billion compare to $7.3 billion in previous year – 41.4 % bullish appreciation in the revenue. Company has also forecasted that, in 2012, the revenue of worldwide social media will touch $14.9 billion, and if the worldwide social media market will surge in similar fashion then revenue will reach whooping $29.1 billion by 2015.

Study also reveals that the major source of revenue for worldwide social media will be advertisements. It will play a key role and will act as the largest contributor for social media companies’ revenue.

It’s been forecasted that Social media advertising revenue will touch $5.5 billion in 2011 and will grow to $8.2 billion by the end of 2012. Advertising revenue includes display advertising and digital video commercials on any device including PCs, mobile as well as media tablets. It’s an interesting facts to know that in third quarter marketers have spent more than 25% of their time on Facebook and company has registered a jump of 54% in cost per click as compared to second one.

“Marketers will begin to transition from ‘onetime placement and click of ads’ toward ‘ongoing engagement’ with the Internet user and will therefore allocate a higher percentage of their advertising budget to social networking sites”. “This is mainly because social networking sites, with the help of social analytics firms, are able to unlock the interconnected data structures of users — mapping lists of friends, their comments and messages, photos and all their social connections, contact information and associated media,” said Neha Gupta, senior research analyst at Gartner.

There are various tools and measurements which have been used to calculate social media revenue. Social Media is defined as the websites where:

  1. One can create a content which can be consumed, promoted, distributed, discovered or shared amongst the users in the form of communities and social activities;
  2. Content may be in the form of words, pictures as well as videos.
  3. The website may be a closed or an open one, it depends on the creator whether he wants to do open access or limited access.
  4. It can be uni-directional or multi-directional depending upon the users’ choice.

Study also enlightens the facts that in 2011 social gaming industry revenue will touch $3.2 billion and the pace will continue in next year – expected to reach $4.5 billion. Social gaming industry comprises  revenue which social networking sites earn directly from users who play games developed in-house. It also allows  game developers/publishers to use the pages of social networking site as a platform to promote their games to users. Revenue is also earned by the means of “virtual wallets” with in the games (like when users spend their virtual money for buying in-game items like swords or tanks, or to create virtual armies.)

“We have seen social networks take a platform-oriented approach to game monetization. That is, the social networks have evolved into platforms for social gaming by publishing APIs that help build an ecosystem of developers and publishers”. “The dominant monetization models for social games are ad-led and ‘freemium’ models. The free-to-play games are funded either through advertising (wall advertisements and in-game branding) or through in-game monetary transactions that enable users to ‘level up’ or buy virtual goods,” as said by Neha Gupta.

It has been concluded from the study that in 2011 worldwide social media subscription revenue might reach $236 million and may touch $313 million in 2012. Also, there are few social networking sites, like LinkedIn, Xing in Germany and Vladeo in France, which charge their users for subscription, mainly for addon premium services. They charge users only if they want their profile view to be expanded.

“From a revenue perspective, the social media market is still in its early stages, even though it has a large number of users who, in some cases, are exhibiting increasingly mature usage patterns”. “Market participants need to build new business models to tap into this increased usage and users’ increased level of engagement,” as said by Neha Gupta

Now let’s see how much the revenue of social media increases worldwide. Hope it touch the margin as provided in the study.Readers what’s your views.

Why Am I fuzzy About The Success of World’s Cheapest Tablet “Aakash”

2

With days passing by, India is becoming more advanced in terms of technology. Few days earlier India has introduced the world’s cheapest tablet named as “Aakash”. The whole project of tablet was headed by India Government who kept  its price quite lower when compared with other tablets of the same class. Akash has been tagged with just $49.98, where as other tablets cost around few hundred dollars.

The basic idea behind introduction of cheapest tablet in Indian market is to make it available for students to make them more educated about digital world. Indian government has also announced that they it will subsidize the “Akash” around 22% to 30% for students to make it more affordable and adoptable especially in rural areas.

However, reading a lot by Aakash tablets for several days, I came across various hurdles which will hindrance the success of tablet in market:

Information:

At the time of development there was uncertainty about the release of “Aakash”. In July last year it was announced that cheapest tablet is going to be developed and it will be headed by Indian Government. But after some time it looked like the project has been dumped and suddenly the announcement came about the expected release in January 2012. It’s been reveal that around 100,000 unit of “Aakash” will be available by January 2012.  Indian Government has also announced that it will provide these tablets at half of the real price to students at several universities. But still it’s not clear that which universities will be covered for such benefits. Also, there is a cloud of doubt that how people can pre-order the commercial version of the Tablet.

Profitability:

Inflexibility in price range may harness the profit of the tablet. It’s been said that it will be available in multiple price ranges with multiple varients of features. For student it’s expected to be available at the cost of Rs. 1500 – 1750 and for professional it’s available at the cost of Rs. 3,000 (inclusive of taxes). Undoubdetly, and professional version of Aakash will contain more features than student version.

Inventory:

There are several issues related to the listing which might break or make the success of the Tablet. It’s not been revealed by the government that which institutes or universities will be listed for providing the tablets.

One of the most important things is how an organization can run without making profit from its gadget.

Connectivity:

It’s a point to notice that in internet users in India are quite less as compared to other countries. For connectivity purpose Aakash will be runing onv GPRS or Wi-Fi network. As we all know that GPRS is one of the costliest and absurdly slow where as Wi-Fi is only available in limited part, so how one can think that it will be successful in such lethargic infrastructure environment.

Support:

The basic problem which arises is related to the issues of support. Who will support the tablet? What will be the developer environment around it? What sort of apps will it run? What will be the encouragement for developers to build apps for this particular device?

I don’t want to state that the project is failure. But, I just want to enlighten the hindrance which will be faced after the launch of the “Aakash”. Let’s hope it should be successful in Indian environment and will overcome from all upcoming challenges.

Apple Sells Out Record iPhone 4S within 12 Hours of Pre-Sales Launch

7

With days passing, Apple’s popularity in the iPhone market is increasing at an enormous speed. The company has revealed an advanced version for iPhone4, called iPhone 4S, at the media event which was held on October 4th at its town-hall auditorium, Cupertino, California and is available for pre-order sales from 7th October. According to an announcement made by AT&T, more than 200,000 iPhone 4s has been sold under the pre-launch duration of 12 hours.

According to the statement “AT&T has seen extraordinary demand for iPhone 4S with more than 200,000 pre-orders in the first 12 hours alone, the most successful iPhone launch we’ve ever had. It’s obvious customers like AT&T’s 4G network, which is the only one that lets their iPhone download twice as fast and talk and surf simultaneously”.

It’s indeed a good news for people as they not have to wait for the launch day of iPhone 4S. But, the main problem – they will not be able to get the iPhone 4S on the launch date – is the expected shipping time that lazes around 1-2 weeks as showing in Apple’s online stores.

However, if anyone wants iPhone 4S on the day of launch then it’s available from 14th October (iPhone 4S launch date) on all Apple’s retail stores. It’s expected that company’ retail store will open around 8:00 am on October 14th.

According to Sprint, “They have completely sold 16GB iPhone 4S but 32GB and 64GB iPhone 4S are still available for preorder”.

It’s been mentioned on Verizon website, that expected shipping time for iPhone 4S is October 21st for 16GB.

iPhone 4S comprises of various interesting features:

  • Dual – Core A5 processor.
  • 8 Megapixel Camera.
  • Improved Battery Life.
  • Siri voice assistant.
  • iCloud.
  • Faster Graphics.
  • Faster network speeds.
  • HD video recording.

iPhone 4S will support both GSM as well as CDMA networks.

On Friday, 14th October, iPhone 4S will be launched in US, Germany, Australia, Canada, France, Japan and UK. In other countries, it may be launched by October last.

One of the most important thing which everyone should know that Apple is also going to release an unlocked version of iPhone 4S for GSM network in November. However, the unlocked version is currently meant only for US customers. The unlocked version will be available in three storage capacities such as 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB. 16GB iPhone 4S will be available at $649, 32 GB at $749 and 64 GB at $849. The GSM unlocked version will be available online only at AT&T. Peoples will not be able to employ GSM unlocked version neither at Verizon nor at Sprint.

Let’s hope advanced version should make a new record and take Apple to a new height. We are also expecting to see the early launch of iPhone 4S in many other continents, like South Asia, where Android mobiles are slowly taking a big leap than Apple’s iOS.

Facebook Is Now Bigger Than Worldwide Internet Population in 2004

1

Few weeks back in F8 conference, Facebook announced that they now have 800 million active users. Interestingly, this number has some drastic comparison to showcase the power and popularity in its own. Back in 2004, the worldwide internet user population was almost equal to the number of users Facebook has now.

According to the research done by pingdom, social media giant is has left many countries behind either in terms of internet users population or – in few cases – the population of whole country. Facebook is only the third biggest country, if we say so, after China and India in terms of population. However, it stands tallest in terms of Internet users as none of the countries have as many Internet users as Facebook has now.

Even, if we combine few of countries and see then as continent, Asia is the only one that stands above than Facebook in terms of Internet users.

There are also many more stimulating facts when you compare Facebook with many countries individually. Social media giant consumes 38% of entire internet population now. While comparing Facebook number with entire population; it has 2.5x the entire population of US and 13x the population of UK.

However, it’s quite likely that Facebook may leapfrog ASIA in terms of internet users in sometime early next year. Facebook is expected to reach the magnificent 1 Billion user mark by end of this year or in early 2012 and by the same time the internet population of ASIA, which is the only continent ahead than Facebook now, might also be little over than 1 billion.

Facebook has come over a long way in last 7 years. Founded in 2004, it has left all its competitors only to fight for survival in the leadership guidance of Mark Zuckerberg. With market valuation of close to $85 billion, company is among the fastest growing venture of all time. Though, there has been many criticism in its 7 years of existence, it would be interesting to see how much more miles still left for the giant to cover in coming few years.

Microsoft Plans to Enhance Windows 8 Performance by Extensive Memory Optimization

2

As Microsoft is slowly nearing to public launch of Windows 8, efforts have been started to tweak the new OS for optimum performance and usability. On Friday, company has revealed the Memory footprint of upcoming Windows 8. It showcases that the imminent Windows OS consumes only half of the memory compare to current Windows 7 memory requirements.

The whole idea behind the exercise is to omit any obligatory upgrade requirements to run Windows 8. This will help Microsoft to convince users for cakewalk migration and adoption from Windows 7 to Windows 8 platform.

“Something that might not be obvious is that minimizing memory usage on low-power platforms can prolong battery life. Huh? In any PC, RAM is constantly consuming power. If an OS uses a lot of memory, it can force device manufacturers to include more physical RAM. The more RAM you have on board, the more power it uses, the less battery life you get. Having additional RAM on a tablet device can, in some instances, shave days off the amount of time the tablet can sit on your coffee table looking off but staying fresh and up to date.” wrote Microsoft’s Bill Karagounis in a blog post on Friday.

To stay certain with this thought, Microsoft tested the memory usage on 2 different machine – running on almost identical hardware configuration – but with different version of Windows OS.

How Microsoft is going to achieve their objective? There are couple of methodology which will help company to do so:

Memory combining:

When users access the content, chances remains high they access similar content in multiple windows and this creates multiple instances in RAM for same content. So many times many applications pre-reserve the memory for additional functionality procrastinating that users may use it in future. However, there is absolute no guarantee whether users will invoke such features in near future.

Through, Memory combining technique, Windows 8 will allocate the RAM only for real time usage and reserve the system memory for all future possible features of applications.

Windows Services Optimization:

While OS is running, many windows services run on background and get revoke automatically with the system start. With “Start on Demand” functionality, company has put many of the services, like Windows update and plug & play, on manual mode. This will tweak the OS for lesser memory consumption for background services.

Less Memory Usage for General OS operations

While executing the application, OS consumes memory for its own services and support. Known as “pages”, company has analyzed this service till the core and found 2 aspects of usage type. One which get refer most are “hot” and other “cold”. To optimize the memory footprints, company has clubbed the “cold” ones with other components to reduce the memory load and use it for other services.

Invoking Desktop Components When Required

Microsoft has changed the behavior of Desktop components with Windows8. “We’ve taken advantage of the fact that there will be some set of devices on which users will stay in the immersive,” says Karagounis. Windows 8 will only initialize operating system components unique to the full desktop experience when users switch outside of Metro. This saves around 23MB in RAM.

Prioritization of Memory

Company has given an ‘self-intelligent touch’ to Windows8. This will help the system to take self-decision over what to keep in the memory and what need to be removed sooner. This way upcoming OS will make use of the memory in optimal way.

Company has already been released pre-beta version of Windows 8 and is expected to be available for users in 2012. The first look of Windows 8 has created much hyped among users and this time company has decided to support ARM and SoC.

Though the road-map of Windows 8 is still under the shell, it would be much interesting to see how users welcome the new Windows 8, especially when more than 70% users are still hanging with most successful Windows XP.

However, if you don’t click on any of the survey, it will automatically play a message to encourage you to take the survey but fails to authorize any possibility of free iPad. Rather, it gets reduce to an “exclusive reward” or probably any similar “surprise gift”.

Scammers are using the trick to generate more revenue for their clients by making you visit to website or e-comm portal supported by affiliate program. This way, scammers are generating more traffic and, probably, many of them but the product or opt for the promoted service on that page.
