It looks like social media giants have got one more competitor in social media space known as Pinterest. It’s a social pin-boarding site where users can create and manage theme-based image collections and visitors can register their comments on such images. Recently a study was conducted which reveals that users are spending more time on Pinterest compare to Twitter, LinkedIn and Google+.

Study highlights that American users spend 1 hour and 17 minutes on Pinterest compare to Twitter (36 minutes), LinkedIn (17 minutes) and Google+ (just 6 minutes). In fact the monthly usage of Pinterest by social media users is quite high than combined usage of all these three social networking sites.

However, Pinterest ranks much behind Tumblr whose monthly usage is near about 1 hour and 38 minutes. With no surprise Facebook is on the top in terms of monthly usage as users spend whooping 6 hours and 33 minutes monthly on Facebook. Interestingly, American users spend 100,000 years in total on Facebook in a month which is comparatively 50 times higher than what they prefer to spend on Twitter.

It might be possible that Twitter fans would consider such stats inaccurate as Twitter is one of the fastest growing social networking sites. But the fact is these stats are based upon the total direct visits to Twitter.com and it doesn’t include app usage and Twitter client. If we also include the number of visits of other two sources, the usage will just be doubled.

Eventually, Pinterest is like a ‘just-born-baby’ in front of Twitter, Google+ and LinkedIn as these three social networking sites have the user base which is 10 to 30 times higher than the users base of Pinterest which is 11 million only. In fact its 12 million unique visitors per months have been beaten up by every social networking site including MySpace and Google+.

One will be surprise to know that Pinterest unique visitor per months has been continuously increasing with an exponential pace from May 2011 onwards. It has been found out that in May 2011 unique visitor on Pinterest was near about 1 million which has reached 12 million in January 2012.

Pinterest is definitely affecting the market share of other small social networking sites like Flickr, StumbleUpon, Foursquare and many others. Also, the growth rate of Pinterest in last 6 months has become a real challenge for other giants to counter. Have you got your Pinterest account reserved ? If not, just do it now. You never know it would be another innovative channel potentially to beat Facebook !
