Samsung Acquires Sony’s LCD Business Unit For $939 Million

It’s bad news for all those people who are planning to buy Sony LCD TV or those who have purchased Sony LCD TV  just because of value-worth of Sony brand. Today, Samsung has announced that it has agreed to buyout stake in Sony LCD. This buyout will help Samsung to enhance and expand its LCD division. The Korean electronic gadgets maker will pay $939 million in cash to Sony to pouch its LCD arm. This buyout will also help Samsung to maintain the lead in LCD TV market as Sony holds significant market in LCD segment and stayed tough nut to crack for Samsung in past.

“Under the agreement, Samsung will acquire all of Sony’s shares of S-LCD Corporation, the two companies’ LCD panel manufacturing joint venture, making S-LCD a wholly owned subsidiary of Samsung,” as said by Samsung Electronics.

However, this move has taken shape as Sony is on its way to restructure its TV business which has been making loss since last seven years. The deal will definitely benefit Sony Corp. which is planning to bring revolution in Television industry by introducing “Four Screen Strategy TV” in future. This television will bridge the gap of network services between Sony products like tablets, personal computers, mobile phones and TVs.

This has resulted in appreciated share price by 1.60 percent of Sony Corp. in Japan Trade Exchange after the announcement.

Interestingly, After this buyout Samsung has become the world largest maker of TVs and Flat screen panels. This shows that buyout has benefited both the companies in a positive manner and future growth is reflecting directly.

Although, this deal might be painful for Sony LCD TV fans since many of the customers prefer Sony LCD TV above other brands. The major reason could be the quality and features provided by Sony Corp. which is far ahead of other LCD TV brands.

The deal has resulted as the New Year gift for both of the companies. One hand Sony got benefited by selling a pie of its loss running business and on other hand Samsung tops the Television industry. Also, this deal will definitely help Sony to sit on cash pile that will help it in restructuring its management and regaining its market position, lost in last seven years.

Samsung Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab Would Not Get ICS (Android 4.0) Update !

It’s really a bad news for Samsung Galaxy S phone and Galaxy Tab owners that they wouldn’t be partaking in Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) updates. Recently, Samsung has announced Galaxy lineups that would be upgraded to Android 4.0 in early 2012. Unfortunately, on December 22, Samsung has revealed on its website that no Android ICS would be coming to Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab due to TouchWiz issues.

TouchWiz is a touch interface developed by Samsung Electronics with their partners and used in Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab. The TouchWiz isn’t available for licensing to any external parties as its available exclusively for Samsung’s sophisticated feature phones.

The company’s blog has clearly stated that the Galaxy S as well as the 7 inch Galaxy Tab will not get any ICS upgrades. Samsung has explained that Google’s mobile platform – Android – is unable to provide the satisfactory experiences especially with TouchWiz, Samsung Widgets, Video calls and other functions accompanied by both the Galaxy Tab and the Galaxy S. A device needs necessary RAM and ROM to run the new OS properly and that’s why, there’s no room for the ICS.

Even, It will not be that easy for users to sell out their Samsung Galaxy S – a less than a year old device they bought by paying a huge price. But, if the matter concerns with ICS update then they might think to get rid off. The way, to customize the previous OS of Galaxy S with latest Android 4.0 ICS, is somewhat risky and might screw up the future validity and guarantee. The user might be able to customize the OS, if they would successfully black-out TouchWiz from the picture. Yahoo Is Considering To Sell Asian Assets To Strengthen US Operations

In last one year Yahoo has significantly lost its credibility in front of investors as well as market. By Q3 of this year, revenue had dipped by 5% year over year and its net earning reduced by 26 percent. Taking the view of loosing market credibility and share, company is considering to sell bulk of its valuable holdings in Alibaba Group of China and Yahoo’s Japan back to majority owners. Currently, Yahoo holds near about 40 percent of Alibaba stakes and 35 percent of Yahoo Japan. However, it’s been expected that Yahoo might sell only 25 percent of Alibaba stake which is equivalent to $7.5 billion. If Yahoo go ahead with the apparent plan stake sale then it will fetch near about $12.5 billion (combined) which will help Yahoo in restructuring it loss making business model.

Interestingly, few days back Yahoo had signed an undisclosed agreement with Microsoft. Also, independent investors like Silver Lake has bid $16.60 per share for 20 percent of Yahoo shares while TPG offered $17.60 per share few week back. Unfortunately, despite of initial support from board, Yahoo was unable to sell its stake to Silver Lake and TPG. Company was badly criticized by its shareholders as they were worried that sale of stake may dilute their holdings and may not do any value addition by getting in new share holders.

Against the milieu, Yahoo resurrected its talk with Alibaba and Softbank – both of them have submitted their initial proposal to buy Yahoo’s stake in October – three weeks ago. During the negotiation, both the parties agreed to hoist the valuation of the Asian asset and Yahoo clasps on to a small piece of Alibaba ante.

Surprisingly, Yahoo board has not yet dismissed the proposal of Silver Lake and TPG according to some of the sources. After the announcement of Yahoo’s Asian asset sale, its share prices soared by 6 percent. Share price rise directly indicates that Yahoo shareholders are satisfied with its current step to sale Yahoo Asian assets.

Personally, I think Yahoo has taken a significant step to restructure its business which is going through rough patches since last few years. Sales of Asian assets will definitely help Yahoo in strengthening its piggy bank.

Users Satisfaction From iPad Fades Out: 7 Percent Declined In 6 Months

It’s well known that the demand of Apple’s iPad is being tremendously increasing since the device hit the market in early April. Presently, it’s estimated that the shipment of the device might reach 18 million units in Q4. Though, everything is moving towards positive note for the company but the satisfaction among the users has plummeted in last couple of quarters. A new survey from the Software Usability Research Laboratory (SURL) has revealed that the majority of iPad owners (84%) are satisfied with their device which is 7% lower compare to another survey done by by  ChangeWave in April 2011.

The new study was entitled among 52 iPad (original iPad or iPad 2) respondents (26 male, 26 female) owners ranging in age 23-80 over selected 75 items. After rigorous investigation from the firm, 83.65% respondents were found quite satisfied with the iPad. Among them, 62% polled that the iPad is excellent and said that they are quite comfort with it. While 10% rated “best imaginable” and 20% said it’s just good.

The survey firm also asked the question about the location of device usage. The survey has noted that the most common place to use the device by the user is their Living room followed by Bedroom. Kitchen and dining room came after living and bed rooms, the users prevented themselves to use the tablet while they were commuting. Surprisingly, more than 20% were accepted that they were used the device even in their bathroom.

It’s really matter of concern that how many apps, generally, users install on their device. The question is important because of Apple’s dominations in number of apps downloads, followed by Android Apps downloads. Majority of users (33%) used to have 21-40 apps installed while only 17% users were interested to install more than 80 apps.

The survey also focused on the way participants’ use the device. 21% of users preferred to carry their iPad every time, while 52% of participants accepted that they use to carry the device when travelling, but only 17% said that they carry out in their work.

The survey also reveals that more than 80% of hourly or daily frequency of activity by the participants on web browsing while approx 70% of their effort goes to email and 60% on news reading.

Astoundingly, more than 80% accepted that they never created any Music and documents for the school, while 70% accepted that they never took picture or videos, or chatted on their iPad.

Obviously, it’s very interesting to know the behavior of the participants with their iPad usage. Overall, Apple always remains conscious about their customers’ interest and the trends. The study might be helpful for the company to design its upcoming iPad to fulfill the customers’ expectations.

Aakash Tablet Delivery Delayed Again: DataWind Commits For Next Year

World’s cheapest Tablet dream is fading again. This time DataWind has disturbed people by announcing the delay delivery of Aakash Tablet to buyers who booked it online in last week. The online booking of Aakash tablet was trigged by the company on 15 December with a promise of 7 days delivery. However, just in 5 days, Datawind had to suspend online booking of Aakash claiming ‘out-of-stock’ position. Now, company has announced that people, who make the online booking of Aakash, should expect the deliver in January 2012 but denied to state any reason behind such delay.

However, this is not the first time when company is derailed from its original plan.  Earlier company has been failed to stay by the promise to make Aakash available in retail stores by end of November. With the revised plan, Aakash is expected to hit retail showrooms not before February 2012.

The online booking of Aakash, which started on 15 December, was made open for everyone including students. However, this also came to many as surprise as company earlier promised that students can et the device only through their colleges.

But the failure and fatigue doesn’t end here; As oppose to their promise of 1 Lack delivery to Government, company managed to deliver only 10,000 devices till now.

Now, with repeated shuffle and differ, the whole idea of owning world’s cheapest Tablet is looking shaggy. It is being speculated that manufacturing a tablet in lots at such dirt-cheap cost may has become a daunting task for DataWind, resulting in repeated misalignment from its own plan way.

The online booking of Aakash went viral in just few days which, apparently, company didn’t expect. The overwhelming response made company to suspend the booking on just 5th day of opening the doors. Infact, hundreds of users have complained about non-receipt of the booking ID they were supposed to get after online booing of Aakash.

With al such change and development, the whole situation looks cloudy. This has not only raised the concerns about Aakash but also on the upgraded version of it – UbiSlate 7.

We have tried contacting DataWind on this matter but by this moment we haven’t got any response from then. Also, there is no official dates have been announced by the company to satisfy the bookings already recorded, besides to guess sometime in January next year.

Now, It’s astounding to learn that Apple is going to redesign its iPhone which is confirmed by senior analyst at PiperJaffray—Gene Munster.

It’s really true; the rumor is buzzing around about the redesign of Apple’s iPhone and iPad. The senior analyst said in his note to investors that Apple hasn’t done any experiment with its hardware design in this year, but it doesn’t mean that the company has seated lethally. The company might redesign its iPhone next year; probably it might be upcoming iPhone 5 which is expected to come in mid of 2012.

Munster has declared that there would be the prospect of two scenarios—Base case and Bull case—in 2013. The Bull case presumes that the company is going to do bullish in 2013. According to Base case prediction, the company would augment its revenue by 18% through the shipment of 142 million units’ iPhones, While “Bull case” might increase the revenue to 35% and expected to sell 162 million iPhone.

Munster stated that the revenue growth is marginal in 2013 that’s only 14% compare to 2011 calendar when the company had marked 56% increment. The analyst also depicts that Apple might release its third generation tablet—iPad 3—next year but also states that company’s iPad 2S might also come. Munster’s calendar demonstrates that the total shipment of iPad is 66 millions in base case while 77.5 million units for Bull case in CY13. The revenue is expected to boost by 11% in base case while 30% in the Bull case.

Currently, the company has launched its iPad 2 in different variations of Wi-Fi and 3G capabilities along with three different capacities of 16 GB, 32 GB and 64 GB. A number of rumors have already speculated about Apple’s high resolution “Retina Display” which might be come next year. Before this, the company might release “iPad 2S” with the same screen resolution as iPad 2 but have the faster processor and Siri.

The company might sell its iPad 2 with the lower cost along with iPad 2S. And also, the company has planned to redesign its MacBook Pro lineup and also expand the MacBook Air with 15-inch screen next year.

The company would continue to sell its iPad 2 next year to contend the low-price tablet in the market. While iPad 2S would definitely be the transitional for iPad 3 to make a proper bridge.
