In the last ten years, the total number of smartphone shipments in India increased from a mere 11 million to 152.5 million in 2019. The exploded adoption of smartphones is primarily driven by the declining ASP (Average Selling Price) of smartphones in India, all thanks to Chinese manufacturers.

Between 2014 and 2019, the quarterly shipments share of Chinese manufacturers, like Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo and others, swell from 1% to 66%. In 2014, Xiaomi ventured into the India market and in no time taken the market by storm by flooding the market with smartphones tagged with jaw-dropping prices. Consequently, the smartphone shipments in India almost doubled in just a year.

In 2016 the total smartphone shipments in India crossed the 100-million mark.

In the last five years, the unprecedented growth of Xiaomi has been no less than a case study for many. The Chinese smartphone manufacturer has captured the largest chunk of the pie. A look at the smartphone shipments share in India by vendors reveals that the company has been giving its competitors, including the global market leader Samsung, run for its money in India for the last few quarters.

It was Q4 2017 when Xiaomi dethroned Samsung first time in India. Since then, the gap between the two smartphone majors has been widening.
