Can Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 Give Other Smartphone OEMs In India A Run For Their Money

Must Read

The India launch of Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 is set for 28 February 2018. Manu Kumar Jain, Global Vice President, Xiaomi and Managing Director, Xiaomi India, has just announced it on Twitter. He also hinted out 7 uber cool features of Redmi Note 7 through an image added in his tweet.

The meteoric rise of Xiaomi in India is no more a surprise. The company has been dominating the India Smartphone market for some time now by outpacing bigwigs, likes of Samsung. To cement its dominant position, Xiaomi is willing to push their boundaries even more with revolutionary products, and the upcoming Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 is one of those.

Revolutionary isn’t a word we associate with the average smartphone model coming out. But the way Manu Jain has been speaking about it is just lifting our expectations higher and higher. Is information we already have on the unreleased device pointing towards its domination?

Xiaomi Redmi Note 7: Upside Down

While speaking about the upcoming Redmi Note 7, Manu Jain went to the extent of claiming that the device is going to be a “game changer” for the smartphone market. However, he further brought into focus the cryptic tweet that he did last month.

He claimed that there was a reason everything in the post was upside down, including the text, the reason being the this is going to turn the smartphone market “upside down”.

But this begs the question: what do we know about the smartphone that is yet to make its India debut? Why is it so intriguing as to make the Global VC of the company excited?

Redmi Note 7 Specification: What’s Under The Hood

As has been heavily publicised, the Redmi Note 7 is the first official release of the sub-brand, Redmi after the split of Redmi from Xiaomi to be positioned as a separate brand in the market. Hence, the people behind it are leaving no stone unturned to make the release as much memorable as possible.

The coveted smartphone model has already been launched in China in January and in no time the company sold over 1 million units of Redmi Note 7. The most striking feature of that device is its 48-megapixel camera sensor. Priced at around CNY 999 (roughly Rs. 10,500), specifications of this level are revolutionary in the first place. In addition to that, it offers a RAM of 3GB and a memory of 32 GB. The rear camera is a dual camera set-up, with another 5-megapixel sensor present near the above mentioned 48 megapixels one. The processor offered is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660.

The company also teased the Note 7 Pro in China, which is expected to be priced at around CNY 1,499 (roughly Rs. 15,700). Regarding upgrades in specifications, the processor is set to be replaced with a brand-new Snapdragon 675.

Redmi Note 7: Is the Model Really that Revolutionary?

The Revolutionary Redmi Note 7 might sound great to the ears. But the specifications aren’t something that hasn’t been attempted before. The first name that strikes might very well be that of Nokia Lumia 1020 back in the day. Today, the phones in the premium and luxury segments do offer even better specifications, with the best example being the Huawei P20 Pro. The reason, however, Redmi Note 7 is indeed very revolutionary is its price.

If smartphones with specifications as high as that of Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 becomes available in the budget segments, most of the smartphone players will be forced to revisit their strategy. The OEMs in the premium and luxury segments will have to push the boundaries further in terms of innovation. On the other hands, players in the budget segment will see Xiaomi eating up a sizeable share of their market, if they don’t adapt.

Considering the dominance that Xiaomi does have in India, a smartphone such as Redmi Note 7 is going to make other players run for their money, should the price point remain similar to its China pricing. But we’re still awaiting reviews regarding the overall functionality and usage of the device. So, it just might be too early to say. At this point in time, the early insight of Redmi Note 7 looks as revolutionary as Manu Jain sounded like.
