0

Yesterday we had mentioned Facebook’s possible achievement of 1 Billion user mark by the year-end. Undoubtedly, India has significant contribution in company’s mammoth success and now stands tall at fifth place in the list of “Top countries on Facebook”. Out of 668 million Facebook users, 23.85 million users are from India alone.

Interestingly, while analyzing Facebook’s India traffic, we have encountered many astounding facts. Financial capital of India – Mumbai leads the way for driving most of the traffic to Facebook. 15% of Indian Facebook users, which stands as 3.6 million, belongs to Mumbai. However, on global scale Mumbai is positioned at number 18 in the list of Top cities on Facebook.

It’s Delhi and Bangalore which stand at number two and three place in the list of top Indian cities on Facebook. Though, both the cities contribute almost similar number of users to Facebook but Delhi leads marginally. With 1.56 million users Delhi pushes Bangalore to third spot which holds 1.52 million Facebook users. Again, on global scale, both the cities are positioned at 36 and 38th spot .

Chennai and Hyderabad secure number fourth and fifth place with 1.2 and 1.81 million users . While on global scale both the cities can be found on 49th and 50th position.

The other Indian cities which have secured a place in the list are Pune, Calcutta, Ahmedabad, Indore and Surat. Though all these cities have less than million users’ contribution each but with an impressive penetration rate all such cities are bound to improve their place on global ranking.

Jakarta tops the list of Top Cities on Facebook (Globally) with 17.48 million users contribution, followed by  Istanbul and Maxico city which have 9.6 and 9.3 million Facebook users. There are many other interesting facts and figures about Facebook which can be learned from here.

Twitter May Buy TweetDeck For $50 Million: An Effort To Edge Out UberMedia ?

1

It seems that anxiousness of Twitter towards third party client apps has not been settled down yet. If we follow latest rumor, Twitter is in “advanced talks” to acquire TweetDeck – the popular desktop client app – for whooping $50 million.

As per the latest report from Wall Street Journal, Twitter’s effort to pocket TweetDeck has been sourced by people “familiar with the matter”. TweetDeck is the second largest third-party Twitter client app used to reach Twitter service from their desktop. In third-party client app market TweetDeck holds 13.1% of market share only after UberSocial – another Twitter client app from UberMedia.

Back in February, Internet was buzzed about the possible takeover of TweetDeck by UberMedia for between $25 – 30 million. However, after the “hate-like” episode between Twitter and UberMedia, story promptly disappeared.

So, what’s really going-on in micro-blogging window? Is Twitter really making such effort or just a implicit rumor?

Many analysts feel that Twitter is trying to setup the field to counter UberMedia, especially after the news – “UberMedia is gearing up for Twitter Competitor”. It was all started when UberMedia tried to buyout TweetDeck despite of having majority share in Twitter client app market through various other apps like UberSocial, Twidroyd, Echofon.

Sensing an unknown and indirect threat to revenue model, Twitter clipped the wings of UberMedia by disconnecting their apps’s access from Twitter network. Though, Twitter released the access to UberMedia apps later with certain guidelines and changes, company passed a very strong message to all social media development company to “focus on Data analysis tools and apps rather than building client apps to access twitter services.”

No surprise, UberMedia possibly went back to their think tanks only to come up – rather avoid such situation again from Twitter – with new streams of revenue model with “no-Twitter-interferences”. Speculations are being made that UberMedia found the best alternative in setting up a direct competition with Twitter through another micro-social-networking website – identical to Twitter.

However, Twitter may be trying to improvise its revenue by adding up new channels like TweetDeck. Earlier Twitter had bought ‘Summize” and renamed as company’s official Twitter app. Now it will be interesting to see what Twitter does with TweetDeck – if ever this deal comes into existence. Besides, it will also widen the gap between UberMedia and Twitter in client app market where both the companies hold 42% and 58% respectively.

Chances are also high that UberMedia has tricked the Twitter and influenced them to go for such possible acquisition with millions of extra cash to burn. Definitely, it will be a daunting task for Twitter as they really need to analyze the real value-worth of TweetDeck.

At this point of time we can only guess the moves from Twitter and Ubermedia as both the companies are working out to kill competition – rather to kill each other. We are keeping a close eye on situation and shall update you for any further development on this.

Facebook Shows Sign of Reaching 1 Billion User Base by The Year End

4

With every passing day Facebook is strengthening its presence and impact on Internet users across the globe. Facebook, recently valued worth $81 billion, has improved its user base count further by securing 80 million new registrations in first quarter of 2011.

Available in 213 countries, Facebook has performed exponentially in first quarter of 2011. Company has grown from 585 million users in December 2010 to 665 million by March 2011. That means around 14% jump in just 3 months of the year. Interestingly, If Facebook can manage to improve the growth ratio marginally; it will be celebrating charismatic 1 billion user base with year-end bash.

In the recent growth teenagers have contributed significantly. Nearly 30% of the new account registrations have been made by users in the age group of 18-24 years of age. Holding 210 million users, this age group constantly remains the burliest one on Facebook.

With 174 million Facebook accounts, the age group of 25 -34 years of age secures the second strongest group on Facebook. It attracted almost 20 million new account registrations in first quarter of 2010.

Not surprisingly, the third biggest gain of Facebook users in the first quarter of 2011 has been in the age group of 35-44 years of age, almost 11 million new registrations and 90 million Facebook accounts in total.

More than 72 % of all Facebook users belong to one of the three above mentioned categories which means more than 475 million users are in the age between 18 and 44 years of age.

United Stats, Indonesia, United Kingdom, Turkey and India are the top countries which have significant contribution in overall growth of Facebook. However, Brazil and Japan got the major role to play in Facebook’s 1 billion mark as they are adding more number of users with highest growth rate.

At this point, next two quarters are going to become crucial for Facebook as it will clear the cloud whether 1 Billion user-base party bash will thrown in 2011 or get shifted for next year.

Samsung Narrows The Gap With PCs: 2 GHz Dual-Core Smartphone by 2012

0

At the time when Smartphone makers are trying to throw competition to an edge, this news can have far better impact on such efforts. Just after 4 months when dual core processors were introduced for Smartphone, Samsung has tried to take big leap by announcing 2 GHz Dual-Core processor Smartphone. Indeed it’s a remarkable effort from the company who has just released the upgraded version of Samsung Galaxy S2 with 1 GHz Dual-core processor.

With such processor, Samsung has tried to narrow the gap between Smartphone and a desktop, especially when it comes to data processing. The 2 Ghz Dual-Core Smartphone is expected to launch by 2012 and will be loaded with many exponential features which need high processing capability.

“We are planning to release a 2 Ghz dual core CPU-equipped Smartphone by next year,” said a high-ranking official from the company. “This product will have the data processing capacities of a regular PC.” Samsung is still developing the dual core CPU to be used in the Smartphone. It is highly likely that it will be launched under the Exynos brand, a processor brand launched by the company in February.

Moving a step further, company is also planning to launch such processor as independent product which can also be sold to other mobile makers.

Again, in the wake os such news, the debate over the future of desktop computers has been resurfaced. Analysts feel that in the presence of extreme capable Smartphones which are equaling the processing speed of desktops and Tablets with Dual core processing speed, it’s very difficult for manufacturers to push the desktop computers to users. Now days people need mobility and instant accessibility with their gadgets which can’t be provided by desktop computers.

After the latest announcement of Samsung, it would be interesting to see the moves of other Smartphone manufacturers like LG, HTC or Sony.

Apple Will Dominate Tablet Market Till 2015 [Analysis]

0

Though, the market and majority of Tablet makers are leaning towards the Android, Apple’s iOS will be able to retain its top position as leading operating system in Tablet market till 2015. Apple’s iOS will own more than half of tablet OSs market share for the next three years.

As per the Gartner, Apple will dominate the tablet OS market till 2015 despite of steady year-on-year decline. iOS market share is expected to reach from 83% of overall Tablet OS market share in 2010 to 47% by 2015. However, Android OS will double its tablet market share from 14% to 38% during the same duration.

“Seeing the response from both consumers and enterprises to the iPad, many vendors are trying to compete by first delivering on hardware and then trying to leverage the platform ecosystem,” said Carolina Milanesi, research vice president at Gartner. “Many, however, are making the same mistake that was made in the first response wave to the iPhone, as they are prioritizing hardware features over applications, services and overall user experience. Tablets will be much more dependent on the latter than smartphones have been, and the sooner vendors realize that the better chance they have to compete head-to-head with Apple.”

The reason behind Android failure to overtake iOS in tablet market shortly is probably the late introduction of Tablet specific operation system – Android 3.0 – also known as Honeycomb. Analysts said Google’s decision not to open up the Honeycomb, its first OS version dedicated to tablets, to third parties will prevent fragmentation, but it will also slow the price decline and ultimately cap market share.

On the other hand, BlackBerry (RIM) tablet OS QNX market share is yet to reach any market share valuation. It’s expected to capture 5.6% of Tablet Oss market share in 2011 and to double its share by 2015. Mostly, it will be Blackberry mobile users who will adopt the Blackberry Tablet only to have seamless synchronization between mobile and tablet.

Few other tablets OSs like MeeGo and WebOS will have marginal contribution in overall tablet OS market share by 2015. Gartner’s detail forecast is available in the report “Forecast: Media Tablets by Open Operating System, Worldwide, 2008-2015.”, which can be downloaded from here.

After BlackBerry, Nokia Faces Ban Over Its Push Email Service

0

After RIM now it’s time for Nokia to face the heat from Indian Government. Stating about security concerns, the Department of Telecom (DoT) India has temporary banned Nokia’s Push e-mail services across the country. The Intelligence Bureau of India has notified Indian service providers to avoid the launch of proposed Push / Power Email service till it gets monitoring system in place.

Last year August, BlackBerry maker Research in Motion (RIM) was warned and later banned from providing Push email service on due to lack of facility to monitor emails from its mobile devices. Though, government had issues an ultimatum to provide a solution till 31 March 2011, apparently it will take some more time to have control mechanism for such services.

Nokia Messaging offers push email services for Yahoo! Mail, Gmail, Hotmail and Rediff mail. E-mail service is being activated in more than 50% of the E-series phones sold in the country.

The home ministry has asked DoT and IT ministry to makes changes in the Indian Telegraph Act of 1885 and Information Technology act of 2007 and provide proper framework to monitor telephone numbers, device identity, email IDs, IP addresses or keywords in real-time.

Google Narrows Gap With Apple: Records 3 Billion Android Apps Downloads

0

Today, Google has announced that Android platform has recorded 3 billion applications installations, up by 50% compare to the previous quarter. Interestingly, it took just two months for Android application market to reach from 2 billion to 3 billion installations. Google announced today that Android platform has now hit 3 billion installations of mobile apps, just two months after hitting 2 billion installations.

The trend indicates that Android users have become more adept when it comes to installing sophisticated and resourceful applications to their Smartphone and tablets.

Earlier, in January Apple celebrated 10 billion applications downloads for iOS – operating system of iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch – compared to hitting its first billion in April 2009. However, Google consumed 20 months to hit its first 1 billion installs on Android, then five months to hit 2 billion.

Despite of substantial gap between Google and Apple in total applications download numbers, Android reportedly generates more revenue through higher ad impressions against iOS which leads in revenue generation through applications sales.

Google is activation more than 350,000 Android devices each day and more than 500,000 advertisers are using the click-to-call ads on such devices. This has shown great confidence in advertisers as they are witnessing higher click-through-rate from mobile advertisement.

Speculations are being made that Android application market will overtake iOS apps download figure by end of this year – if growth of Android continues in the same fashion. Such speculations are backed by the scenario where mostly all computer manufacturing companies are gearing up to launch their own tablets mostly running on Android platform.

Android Stands Behind iOS in Revenue But Leads in Ad Impressions [Study]

3

If you are influenced with the latest hype of Android and iOS (Apple) and considering to opt mobile marketing mix for your company, this report may mystify you or – rather – may help you to design your mobile marketing plan efficiently. As per the March report from Millenial Media, a mobile advertisement company that publishes monthly report on mobile market trend, Android and iOS has edged out each other in two different but imperative segments of mobile industry.

While Google led Android lags behind Apple led iOS in Revenue generated from applications sales with good margin, Android demonstrates a solid lead in garnering the highest number of advertising impressions. Unfortunately, none of mobile operating systems have emerged as clear winner but with own set of benefits for application developer and advertisers.

Report claims that 64% of ad impressions were generated from Smartphones outpacing feature phones and connected devices with greater margin. While digging further in Smartphone space, 48% of Smartphone ad impressions came through Android phones compare to iOS which managed to generate only 31% ad impressions.

However, while scaling the report on revenue generation aspect, Apple’s iOS beats Android by controlling 47% of mobile revenue market which came through applications downloads.

On the other side of the coin, global market share of Android has been surged from 7% back in Q4 2009 to around 33% in the same quarter of 2010. Interestingly, despite of iOS’s applications demands, Apple’s iOS market share constantly declined from 28% to 25% in same duration.

In Application category, Games, Music and Social Media applications remained under highest demand. If the trend continues in the same fashion, Android, apparently, will overtake iOS in revenue market soon.

It’s Twitter vs UberMedia: Which Social Network Will You Adopt ?

2

Internet has been flooded with the news about much anticipated Twitter alternative from UberMedia – The number one Twitter client apps maker. Speculations are being made that UberMedia is gearing up to launch another social media network to set up a direct competition with Twitter. Though, the sources are yet anonymous, news apparently holds significant credential as the relationship between Twitter and UberMedia are going through some rough patches for long.

On Wednesday CNN reported that several sources claimed that UberMedia was considering creating its own Social Network to compete with Twitter:

“The service would seek to attract users by addressing common complaints about Twitter, such as its restriction on the length of a message and how it can be confusing to newcomers, according to these sources, who were not authorized to speak publicly about the plans.”

Report also claims that several sources have confirmed this news with almost same message. However, the new Social Network from UberMedia will address all pain points of Twitter, like 140 character limit, to make it more lucrative and functional.

So, what made UberMedia to think in the direction of Twitter alternatives when they are already enjoying the top position in Twitter app market after Twitter’s own apps ?

Currently UberMedia holds the majority in third party applications market through which people logging to Twitter every day. The user count is in millions and UberMedia has supplemented these numbers by owing multiple similar platforms like UberSocial, Twidroyd and Echofon. Though Twitter recently claimed that 90% of Twitter users still use company’s official Twitter apps on monthly basis, Twitter became anxious about the growth of third party twitter client apps and banned many including UberMedia’s apps to access Twitter services.

However a recent report from Sysomos, a research and analysis firm claims that 42% of twitter users are fascinated towards third party applications like Tweetdeck, Twidroyd etc to use Twitter services.

With all such scenario, one thing clearly emerges out in the favor of UberMedia: If company offers similar service which can be identical to Twitter with, possibly, few additional benefits, it will not be a daunting task for users – who uses Twitter through UberMedia’s client apps – to jump out of Twitter.

Also, an ongoing relationship between Twitter and UberMedia is already quit strained and UberMedia will surely not like to get caught under similar situation like before when Twitter blocked their access. Essentially, such rumors will only fuel the fire and may throw the scrambled relationship to a dead-end.

We are keeping a close eye on further development in this regards and shall keep on updating you regularly.

0
Webby awards 2011

One of the most prestigious awards for excellence on the internet – Webby Awards – is back for the year 2011 with the list of nominees yesterday. Interestingly, micro social networking website Twitter has received the nomination for the year 2011 awards under the “Community” category.

The Webby Awards is an annual event get organised by The International Academy Of Digital Arts and Sciences which recognises various web properties for achieving phenomenal success and distinction over the web in a year.

Every year over 100 awards are given in four distinct categories – websites, interactive advertising, online film and video, and mobile – and these are then further broken down into sub-categories, with 70 prizes available in the websites field alone.

However, Twitter’s competition is pretty assorted and includes Tumblr, Openideo, and Cuteness.com

Each category has two awards – the Webby – which comes through the selection procedure by Academy and second – People’s Voice award- where the public has all its say through the voting system. The voting process has been triggered and if you feel that twitter is your take you can cast your vote in favour here to help Twitter win.

It’s a second chance for Twitter to get nominated for Webby Award. Last year Twitter crossed over competitors only to collect the prizes in the Best Practices and Social networking categories.  Surprisingly, this year Twitter doesn’t get a place for such categories, though one of the Twitter’s client applications “HootSuite” has managed to reserve a place as a nominee under Social Media category this year.

Microsoft Previews Internet Explorer 10

0

It’s just less than a month when Microsoft had launched much hyped Internet explorer 9.0 – after prolonged beta test for months – the first platform preview of Internet explorer 10 is already out. Earlier today, at Mix11 developer conference in Las Vegas, technology titan has triggered the extended browser battle with the launch of Internet Explorer 10.

The preview, which is now available for download, is not getting considered as a whole new architecture, but rather an enhancement process of IE 9.0 where company was focused on HTML 5, hardware acceleration and CSS3.

“IE10 builds on full hardware acceleration and continues our focus on site-ready Web-standards,” IE corporate vice president Dean Hachamovitch said in an announcement. “This combination enables developers to deliver the best performance for their customers on Windows while using the same, Web-standard markup across browsers.”

Mr. dean said that tough its only three weeks when company started developing IE 10 but it’s already comfortable showing off what it has built so far. At the Mix11 conference, he took the daunting task of comparing some of its capabilities against Google’s Chrome browser and revealed that IE10 will include additional support for CSS3, including Gradients and the Flexible Box layout. He also mentioned that additional IE10 previews will be rolling out every eight to twelve weeks.

Earlier on March 14 this year, Microsoft finally released the IE9 after whopping 40 million downloads during its beta version. Though it got significant attraction and attention from users and was downloaded 27 times per second, it was still sort compare to download figures of Mozilla’s Firefox which was downloaded more than 80 times per second during its first day of availability. Google Chrome is already leading the browser market as Top gainer of 2010.
