Apple iOS 12 Adoption: Only 11% of iOS Devices Run On the Latest Version

Must Read

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has finally rolled out the latest variant of the iOS, iOS 12, on the 17th of September. This new iOS has shown a lot of improvements over its predecessor, making the device much faster and stable. But despite this, the adoption of iOS 12 is slower than its predecessors.

Mixpanel, a data analytics company, has managed to point out the fall in iOS adoption rates. Just over 10% of the people have adopted the new iOS 12 in the initial 48 hours of release. Last year, iOS 11 managed to get adopted by the same number of people in just about 24 hours. iOS 10 was even faster in this regard. It managed to get adopted by 14.45% of the people in the initial 24 hours.

iOS 12 Adoption Slower Than Expected

Apple’s policies of aggressively updating the operating system in their devices have often sparked debate. Many of the updates have often turned out to be slow at first. Others are just full of bugs. Apple iOS 11 wasn’t really liked by all the apple users due to the issues that it brought about. This, over time, has brought about a lack of trust in the company’s policy of updates. This is one of the main reasons why the latest operating system rolled out by Apple, iOS 12, has people adopting it at a rate lesser than that of its predecessors.

iOS 12 installations hit 2.8% on the day of its release, followed by 7.8% on the next day. When compared to iOS 11, launched on 19 September 2017, it installed on 4.15% of Apple devices on the very first day of its release, followed by 11.29% on the next day. T

Surprisingly, the iOS 12 installation rate, just after 24 hours of launch, is slowest than all its predecessors.

iOS 12 adoption graph

One factor that might have contributed to the fall in adoption rates is that it was released on a Monday. People usually wait for the weekends to install major software updates such as these. This is primarily because of a large amount of time that these updates might end up taking.

Improvements of iOS 12 Over iOS 11

But, contrary to expectations, Apple has managed to bring forth a host of improvements through its latest iOS. The most noticeable improvement among them all is the aspect of speed. iOS 11 had a notorious reputation of slowing down the devices after its installation. The new iOS 12 primarily fixes that.

After installation of iOS 12, apps launch on iPhone 6 plus up to 40% faster than iOS 11. The keyboard appears up to 50% faster to make typing more responsive, while the opening the camera on the lock screen to take photos can be done 70% faster. In addition to this, the other apps are now able to launch twice as fast. Apple has managed to add fluidity to the transitions in between apps. Animations are now much smoother and responsive to their operating system. The new update has also managed to bring about optimizations of apps when the operating system is under load. Thus, their launch speed is now much faster under load conditions.

As of today, nearly 80% of all Apple devices using iOS 11, compared to 12% of iOS 12.

What Does It Mean For iOS 12?

Despite the initial reluctance of people to update their devices with yet another iOS, I don’t expect it to be a problem in the long run. People are going to notice the variety of improvements brought about by the new iOS 12 sooner rather than later. In addition to all these improvements, Apple has also managed to add a lot of hidden features in it. These include an alternate appearance in Face ID, a temporary Do Not Disturb mode, iPhone X gesture on iPad, new message camera tools, and many more. But most of all, it exhibits the one feature that people crave for in a new iOS – stability. Apple has finally come up with a stable iOS. Let’s see if they can continue this good work in the future.
