Facebook back to networking in Pakistan !

1

A Pakistani court on Monday directed authorities to restore access to Facebook nearly two weeks after blocking the popular social networking website for hosting a page with blasphemous caricatures of Prophet Mohammed. “Restore Facebook. We don’t want to block access to information,” Justice Ijaz Chaudhry of the Lahore High Court said.

He adjourned the proceedings till June 15 and said he would review his decision on that date.

“I am not closing this case,” the judge said. The judge asked Deputy Attorney General Naveed Inayat Malik to tell the court on June 15 whether any websites, including Facebook, had again uploaded any blasphemous material.

Malik informed the court that the Pakistan government had registered a protest over the blasphemous and sacrilegious content posted on Facebook with the US, where the website has its headquarters.

US authorities had agreed with Pakistan that the hosting of such material on a website is a “crime,” Malik said.

An assurance had been given to Pakistan that something similar would not happen again, he added.

The Islamic Lawyers Movement, which filed the petition that led to the blocking of Facebook and other sites hosting blasphemous content, protested the court’s decision.

The judge remarked that if any websites hosted blasphemous content, they would again be blocked.

Justice Chaudhry had directed the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority on May 19 to block Facebook over “blasphemous” caricatures of Prophet Mohammed.

Authorities subsequently extended the crackdown to other websites.

In Islamabad, Wahaj-us-Siraj, a spokesman for the Internet Service Providers Association of Pakistan told PTI that about 1,200 URLs continued to be blocked to prevent access to blasphemous and sacrilegious content.

He said the ISPs would restore access to Facebook as soon as they received an order from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority.

Pakistan plays politics with Facebook !

1

Just few days back, we heard about Pakistan banned Facebook, Youtube & Twitter. Despite of partial release of YouTube, after deletion of controversial objects, Pakistan still continue the ban on Facebook. Now the stories are getting air that Facebook ban was much more political influenced instead of sentimental of muslims in Pakistan.

This theory has started taken share after an alternative of Facebook, MillatFacebook.com, started publicizing its presence and effect in full swing. By look and flow of data MillatFacebook.com seems to be a replica of banned Facebook. Does that mean the alternative of Facebook was already aware about upcoming Facebook ban and was ready with all features similar to Facebook to offer ? Theories are also taking shape that the controversy which dragged Facebook in trouble was originally took birth from the mind of few people influenced by Millatfacebook. Since Facebook is a social networking site where content can be uploaded by anyone anytime, it can’t be ruled out the possibility of those content was uploaded by those people influenced by Millatfacebook, intentionally.

MillatFacebook promises to help connect users to 1.57 billion Muslims as well as what it describes as sweet people from other religions. Thousands of people in Pakistan have demonstrated against the US-based social networking site.

The developer of the site says the aim was to register disapproval of the and to offer an alternative to a site that has also been criticised for its lax and confusing privacy controls. Now with the limited restrictive capability & capacity over the online portals and social networking site, it need to seen how MillatFacebook.com ensure the content delivery inline with Pakistan’s strict & hard sentiments towards its people and religion.

Dhoni is all set to loose his No 1 position in ODI

0

India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni is all set to lose his numero uno status in the ICC rankings for ODI batsmen after deciding to skip the triangular series in Zimbabwe starting on Friday.

A player loses half a per cent of his ratings points for every ODI missed and Dhoni, who currently leads Michael Hussey by just eight rating points, will slip behind the Australian when the rankings are released after the Zimbabwe tri-series.

Dhoni had regained the top spot from Hussey in February after the Australian scored 23 against New Zealand in the fourth ODI and didn’t play in the fifth.

Sachin Tendulkar (fourth), Kumar Sangakkara (10th), Virender Sehwag (11th), Yuvraj Singh (14th), Gautam Gambhir (23rd) and Mahela Jayawardena (29th) are all likely to slip in the rankings after opting out of the May 28-June 9 series.

India and Sri Lanka have rested their top players for the low-profile Zimbabwe tri-series and it will give a chance to the players who have gone for the tour to increase their ranking.

Stand-in captains Tillakaratne Dilshan (13th) of Sri Lanka and India’s Suresh Raina (16th) along with Virat Kohli (21st) will get good opportunities to move up the table.

Man pays Rs 1 Million for a Number Plate !

1

It may be very usual thing in Dubai where people are crazing behind the fancy number for their luxury cars, but not very much much in India. Rarely we hear news about people paying thousands of rupees for a Number Plate but this time the craze has gone beyond the head of a Chandigarh resident named Narinder Singh Shergill who paid USD 23,000 ( INR 1,000,000 ) for a Number plate – 0001.

Shergill’s adventure in picking up the expensive number at an auction here last week – which cost him half the price of the Toyota Fortuner SUV that he recently bought for around Rs 2 million – may have earned him a few angry words from his wife but the proud owner of the number, CH-01AC-0001, has no regrets for paying a high price for the number.

“My wife did get angry when I went home after buying the number at the auction. I always wanted that number and for something that you really desire, the price does not remain important,” said Shergill, who is an agriculturist now dealing in real estate. “I was shocked initially when I learnt that he (Shergill) had bought the 0001 number at such a high cost. At this price, we could have bought another luxury car or two mid-segment cars,” wife Jaskaran Kaur said.

Shergill had recently received compensation running into nearly Rs 20 million (Rs 2 crore) for a prime piece of land, 20 km from here in Punjab, which the government acquired for expansion of a national highway. Shergill is certainly not the only one chasing ‘VIP’ numbers for high prices.

In recent years, nearly half a dozen people have paid up to half a million rupees to pick up the ‘0001’ series number. In Punjab’s Jalandhar city, 150 km from here, a Delhi-based businessman, Pravin Chaudhary, bought the ‘0001’ series number for his luxury Rs.20 million Bentley car for a whopping Rs 725,000 in August 2008.

The non-resident Indian (NRI) owner of a C-class Mercedes bought a VIP number – CH-04-0001 – for that price in April 2007. NRI from Britain, Santokh Singh, was able to get the better of nine other bidders as they tried their best to get the ‘0001’ number in the newly launched series for Chandigarh. The reserve price for the number was Rs 25,000. Any number of choice comes for a reserve price of Rs 5,000 to Rs 15,000 if it does not have more than one bidder.

“Earlier only influential people used to get hold of VIP numbers. Now, if you have the money and the intention, it’s yours for the taking,” said businessman Vikram Singh. The craze for VIP numbers has been quite evident in the last 5-6 years when the open auctioning of these registration numbers started in Chandigarh. The highest-ever bid made for any number was Rs 505,000 two years ago for the CH-03-U-0001 series.

The registration and licencing authority (RLA) here has been generating a lot of revenue – running into a few millions – for the government though the sale of numbers. Chandigarh has the distinction of having one of the highest densities of motor vehicles in the country. For a population of just over 1.1 million, there are over 650,000 registered vehicles. However, the VIP numbers do not always fetch such high stakes.

In a previous registration series launched for Chandigarh (CH-03-Z-0001), the number went for just Rs 85,000 as there were not too many bidders for the last alphabet (Z) of the ‘CH-03’ series.

Microsoft bets big on Internet Explorer 9 (IE9)

4

Microsoft Corporation could regain the edge over rivals Google Inc and Mozilla Firefox with its new Web browser due to be launched next year, the head of Microsoft Internet Explorer said.

Ryan Gavin said in an interview Microsoft was generating a high level of interest in Internet Explorer 9 (IE9) from the external software developers who are key to its success, thanks to new capabilities and a new, more open approach towards such third parties.

Microsoft, which was overtaken on Wednesday by Apple Inc as the world’s most valuable technology company, has seen Internet Explorer’s market share dwindle to 60 percent from about 95 percent in the early 2000s.

U.S. and European regulators have helped rival browsers like Google Chrome to flourish by loosening the ties between Internet Explorer and Microsoft’s Windows operating system that runs 90 percent of the world’s personal computers.

Google is developing a rival operating system based on its Chrome browser, which is intended to be leaner and more Web-friendly than Windows, as well as being free.

Microsoft is betting IE9 will provide a far superior visual experience to currently available browsers by harnessing the power of the computer’s graphics processor via Windows to accelerate the software process.

With HTML5, a new Web standard gaining in popularity, it also hopes to be able to deliver powerful visuals via a single mark-up language readable by all browsers, simplifying the life of developers and improving the user experience.

HTML5 makes possible rich applications like video on the Web that are currently enabled by Adobe’s Flash and Microsoft’s own, far less widely used Silverlight technology.

Features to check with IE9.0

All in
HTML5 is already at the centre of a public row between Adobe and Apple, which has rejected Flash on the iPhone and iPad in favour of HTML5.

“We are putting HTML5 at the centre of IE9. We are all in with HTML5,” Gavin told Reuters.

“Today, if developers want to use the exact same markup, they use plug-ins – Silverlight and Flash – to do that. HTML5 is going to give developers that capability for things like graphics and video in the future.”

Asked how long he thought it would be until HTML5 made Flash and Silverlight redundant, Gavin said: “I think the plug-in model with standards is a thing that’s going to continue to cohabit (with HTML5)”.

With IE9, Microsoft has decided to engage developers openly at a far earlier stage than usual by releasing a test-drive platform containing its basic components, to create excitement and iron out bugs. (ie.microsoft.com/testdrive) . TEST DRIVE IE 9.0

“We started with a new model with IE9, it’s the first time we’ve ever done it,” Gavin said. “It’s basically a way for developers to see in a highly secure, well-tested environment what are the new capabilities we’re building.”

He said the platform had been downloaded about a million times since the first version was published in March. Microsoft is updating it once every eight weeks.

Responses from developers on the Microsoft IE blog (blogs.msdn.com) have been mixed. Many welcome the new possibilities, but many also complain IE9 requires the latest Windows 7 or Vista software to run.

“You guys have turned around a 10 year sinking torpedo,” writes James Tiedt on the blog. But AlfonsoML asks the blunt question: “What good is a browser if most of the people keep using XP and won’t be able to use it?”

Nine-year-old XP still has 63 percent of the total operating-system market, according to Web analytics firm Net Applications. Vista has 16 percent and Windows 7 has 12 percent, with non-Windows systems on 10 percent.

Yahoo India launches World Search Championship 2010

1

Yahoo India has launched World Search Championship 2010, an online game-based search competition where users have to answer 10 questions in the shortest possible time. An interesting part of the competition is that it prompts participants to use Yahoo search to find the right answers. Yahoo had launched a similar completion in the country in October 2008.

“With an overwhelming response witnessed for the World Search Championship 2008, we wanted to provide our users the thrilling experience once again. The feedback was exciting from previous contest and we think that it will again create similar ripple across the online gaming and quizzing communities,” Nitin Mathur, senior director, marketing, Yahoo India, has told.

According to Nitin Mathur, WorldSearchChampionship.com recorded over 1.1 million unique visitors and 17 million page views in 2008. “There were more than 550,000 registered users on the site with many users completing the contest more than 2,000 times. The contest resulted in more than 20 million search page views for Yahoo,” Mathur added.

Nitin Mathur further said that the website traffic on WorldSearchChampionship.com in 2008 peaked between 12 noon to 3 pm and between 11 pm to 2 am indicating high engagement during office and late night hours. The website also had an interesting feature where users uploaded video snippets of how they were training themselves for the championship.

In that sense, Google Creative Sandbox event is an effort to engage and enable agencies and marketers to foresee the endless possibilities that they can explore on the digital medium and go beyond the traditional campaigns that we see today in India.”

Raajneeti is about to begin, so the controversy !

1

UTV New Media, the digital arm of UTV Software Communications Ltd., announced the launch of a voice blogging service for one of the most anticipated films of the year Raajneeti. Bringing the entire cast and crew to interact with their fans, this service will have movie stars upload personalized voice blogs about the film tits-bits and gossip from the sets and from their city visits and more.

Raajneeti is co-produced by UTV Motion Pictures and Walkwater Media Ltd; and is directed by ten time national award winner Prakash Jha. Scheduled for a June 4th release, Raajneeti stars Katrina Kaif, Ranbir Kapoor, Nana Patekar, Ajay Devgan, Arjun Rampal, Manoj Bajpai and Naseerrudin Shah along with newcomer Sarah. The music of the film has been composed by the Wayne Sharpe and screenplay is by Prakash Jha & Anjum Rajabali.

As the date of release of Prakash Jha’s latest film Raajneeti is coming close, it is being dragged into new controversies. The film has now got into two new controversies one by a Mumbai based social worker and the other by actor-producer-director Kamal R Khan.

a Mumbai based social worker, who may be a big Sonia Gandhi loyalist has sought a ban on the film saying that the central character of the film resembles the Congress president. The concerned person has alleged that the character in the film, which resembles Sonia Gandhi has been portrayed as a negative character.

But, director of Raajneeti Prakash Jha is not disturbed by this charge in any way. Rubbishing such charges, he says, “Let all these self-styled supports of Soniaji come forward to show their loyalty to her. I am not an irresponsible citizen and filmmaker, who would do something so foolish as to portray Soniaji in a bad light. When no one has seen even a single frame of Raajneeti, how can they presume that Katrina’s character has any resemblance to Soniaji? Let Soniaji watch the film and decide for herself.”

Prakash Jha is also upset with Kamal R Khan, who has sent a legal notice to the director of Raajneeti alleging that the rights of the title Raajneeti belong to him. Prakash said he does not feel there is any need for him to address the issue as he would only answer Kamal’s charges in court.

Prakash Jha would be hoping that these new controversies that his latest film Raajneeti has been dragged into do not have any impact on the smooth release of the film.

Apple overtakes Microsoft !

3
Wall Street has called the end of an era and the beginning of the next one: The most important technology product no longer sits on your desk but rather fits in your hand.

The moment came on Wednesday when Apple, the maker of iPods, iPhones and iPads, shot past Microsoft, the computer software giant, to become the world’s most valuable technology company.

This changing of the guard caps one of the most stunning turnarounds in business history for Apple, which had been given up for dead only a decade earlier, and its co-founder and visionary chief executive, Steven P. Jobs. The rapidly rising value attached to Apple by investors also heralds an important cultural shift: Consumer tastes have overtaken the needs of business as the leading force shaping technology.

Microsoft, with its Windows and Office software franchises, has dominated the relationship most people had with their computers for almost two decades, and that was reflected in its stock market capitalization. But the click-clack of the keyboard has ceded ground to the swipe of a finger across a smartphone’s touch screen.

And Apple is in the right place at the right time. Although it still sells computers, twice as much revenue is coming from hand-held devices and music. Over all, the technology industry sold about 172 million smartphones last year, compared with 306 million PCs, but smartphone sales grew at a pace five times faster.

Microsoft depends more on maintaining the status quo, while Apple is in a constant battle to one-up itself and create something new, said Peter A. Thiel, the co-founder of PayPal and an early investor in Facebook. “Apple is a bet on technology,” he said. “And Apple beating Microsoft is a very significant thing.”

As of Wednesday, Wall Street valued Apple at $222.12 billion and Microsoft at $219.18 billion. The only American company valued higher is Exxon Mobil, with a market capitalization of $278.64 billion. The companies have comparable revenue, with Microsoft at $58.4 billion and Apple at $42.9 billion. But in their most recent fiscal years, Apple had net income of $5.7 billion, while Microsoft earned $14.6 billion.

Microsoft has more cash and short-term investments, $39.7 billion, to Apple’s $23.1 billion, which makes the value assigned by the market to Apple, essentially a bet on its future prospects, all the more remarkable.

Youngest Indian Hero who won the Mount Everest !

0

It was Saturday 22nd May 2010; day starts with the horrible news of AI fatal crash in Mangalore. Switch any of the channels, only horrified pictures, video clips about M’gl crash. All sympathy, crying and lauds from their near & dear ones. Media, reporters, Press conferences, AI officials, Leaders all were juggling to handle the situation as early as possible. While this was going on near the tale of India, at top of India someone was heading towards setting up a good news for whole world and wining over largest & strongest mountain. It was Arjun Vajpai, 16 year old from Delhi who was about to win over 8,848-metre-high Mount Everest, via the traditional South Col route in Nepal.

Sooner, the big news comes about his successful accomplishment on Mount Everest and becoming the youngest Indian to achieve such milestone in his career. But it all went in a low lime light as most of the Media was busy in covering M’gl disaster. No offence. That’s also important specially at that time. It’s been more than 28 hours but still no one cares about him from Media. Does that mean Media is more bother about his TRP, Ads, Prime Time calculations. Anyways, I will talk about Indian Media in my next article. It’s time to talk about Arjun which can help Indians to cheer for something specially after such M’gl tragedy.

Over the moon at her son’s achievement, Priya Vajpai said: “I have no words to describe just how proud I am. We knew that he was going to push for the peak on Saturday morning and when at 6.30 a.m., members of the team coordinating the climb phoned to tell us that Arjun had successfully managed to climb Mt. Everest and that he was safe, we all jumped for joy.

Arjun is a student of Ryan International School, at Sector 39 in Noida. According to his mother, he has been always been an outdoor person and loves trekking, hiking, football and basket ball. He was introduced to mountaineering only three years ago, but took to it like a fish to water.

Arjun was part of a 12-member expedition team that has a record number of Indian climbers trying their luck individually. His father Sanjiv Vajpai, a former Army officer, said he was initially afraid to let Arjun go on the expedition.

“He is just 16 years old and I wasn’t sure if it would be fair to expose him to such a life-threatening risk. But his instructors at the Nehru Mountaineering Institute, where he did two mountaineering courses, said he had both the physical and mental ability to summit Mt. Everest and so we decided to let him go.”

Arjun equalled the record of a Nepalese Sherpa Temba Tsheri, who also climbed the peak when he was sixteen.Arjun’s team was led by Apa Sherpa, 50, who broke his own record to become the first man to climb the peak for a record 20th time.

The Noida boy also broke the record of Krushnaa Patil, 18, from Maharashtra, who became the youngest Indian to reach the highest peak in 2009.

Along with Arjun, also making it to the top was an Indian woman Mamta Sodha, who reached the summit at 10:24 a.m. The feat of the two was conveyed to PTI on phone by Chunu Shrestha of the Asian Trekkers, who had organized the expedition.

Congrats Arjun for all his success and to feel Indians proud !

Was it Microsoft who establised Facebook ?

5

Facebook is growing and beating the speed of any other social networking portal day by day. People are registering themselves, chatting, discussing about it at every corner of the internet way. But Facebook is not just popular bcoz of its everyday growing users ( currently total 500 Million+ users). According to Nicholas Carlson, editor of BusinessInsider, there were 11 companies who played an important role for gaining Facebook such an exposure.Top of all, it’s really surprising, it was Microsoft who outplayed rest all the companies and made Facebook out of reach from most of the companies.

An interesting story behind the success of Facebook and how Microsoft helped Facebook to transform its image from 1.5 Billion to 15 Billion company:

  1. As early as 4 months after Facebook’s inception, people with money and people representing companies with money began lining up to beg Facebook cofounder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg to take their cash and sell the company. Obviously, Mark turned all their offers down. In June 2004, much before outside investment, Mark fielded an offer of USD 10 Million from an unknown investor.
  2. Very shortly it was Friendster who was also interested in Facebook. But this acquisition was based on next round of funding for Friendster. It never went through.
  3. Summer of 2004, it was “Big Elephant” Google offered a ride to Facebook. At that time it was “TheFaceBook.com”.
  4. Spring of 2005, Facebook was talking with Washington Post company for investments. To surprise all, from nowhere Viacom offered USF 75 Million for Facebook acquisition.
  5. In the spring of 2005, MySpace which was monitoring the rising glory of Facebook, tried checking nerves of Facebook and indirectly offered some unknown figure for Facebook acquisition. Facebook never got interested in that deal.
  6. In January News Corp wanted showed interest in buying Facebook with half hearted feeling. Ros Levinshon, News Corp Boss was not completely convinced with the future growth of Facebook.
  7. Viacom never gave up. MTV told Viacom that their viewers are spending more and more time on Facebook. This made Viacom to check sense of blood from Facebook. Viacom boss flew to meet Tom. Tom never got interested.
  8. In early 2006, MTV boss Michael Wolf stopped by Facebook one last time. Zuckerberg told him he thought the company was worth $2 billion. A couple weeks later, Viacom sent Facebook a $1.5 billion offer – $800 million in cash up front, the rest a payout later. Through few sources, it was confirmed that Facebook was almost sold with a condition of higher upfront payment. Deal felt apart. Viacom bosses never turned back.
  9. Struggling to regain its popularity, Yahoo gave a thought to buy Facebook in summer 2006. Yahoo offered Facebook USD 1 Billion. Facebook investors and many of it executives were interested in this deal. Facebook decided to evaluate Yahoo offer after the Newsfeed RSS launch which was due shortly. They decided this to check the popularity of Facebook further which may turn back with better offer from Yahoo. But after announcing horrible Q2 earning, Yahoo lowered its offer USD 850 Million, which Facebook considered rubbish.
  10. Now it was turn for AOL. In mid 2006, AOL decided to buy Facebook. Their Plan : Time Inc  and AOl  together they would offer USD 1 Billion. Deal never got through.
  11. Yahoo comes back again in fall 2006 with its offer of USD 1 Billion. By then Facebook was having registration of 2,000 – 5,000 per day. Eager to exit, Facebook investors and executive wanted this deal to happen besides one. It was Facebook COO Owen van Natta.
  12. Hey Its Google again. Google again reconsider to buy Facebook. This time Google never got a deal but offered a strategic investment in Facebook with a evaluation of USD 15 Billion.
  13. Keeping a close eye of Google’s move Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer offered to buy the Facebook in 2007. Steve knew Mark would never relinquish control over Facebook, so he came up with a deal based on Hoffman-LaRoche’s acquisition of Genentech. Ballmer somehow wanted to have direct/indirect influential control over the Facebook to keep Google away from Facebook. The acquisition never happened, but Microsoft did buy 1.6% of Facebook for about $250 million. That deal, which set Facebook’s value at $15 billion, stipulated that Facebook would have to give Microsoft notice if it ever began to take a buyout offer from Google seriously. This was the turn which gave Facebook much needed hike and exposure in the investment market.Microsoft’s $247 million investment, which set Facebook’s value at astronomical $15 billion, stipulated that Facebook would have to give Microsoft notice before it ever considered a buyout offer from Google – just about the only other company in the world that could pay so much for a tech startup with no revenues. If Facebook ever sells (to anyone besides the public in an IPO), it’ll be to Microsoft or to a company that made an offer Microsoft chose not to match.

Giving a thought on all the sequences of buying efforts from various companies, Facebook never got evaluation of more than USD 1.5 Billion. But it was Google who just showed interest and evaluated higher. Following to which, Microsoft not only increased the hype of Facebook by 8 times but also freeze the expectations of various future investors for Facebook. Shall we understand that predominance in IT between Google and Microsoft is becoming sweet portion for rest of the companies!!
