Is Social Media a Fad?

1

Online Social Networking has had a significant impact on the lives of people by and large. It has transformed the way we connect and has propelled  baby faced geeks like Mark Zuckerberg to the  billionaires club.  As we get used to this paradigm shifting movement, it is time to ask the following profound question :

“Is Social Media a fad or the biggest shift since the industrial revolution?”

Although the short clip is not without an agenda–it wants to prove that we’re on the brink of a social media “revolution” from which there’s no turning back–the statistics presented in the animated short are hard to ignore.

Here are just a few of the notable social media stats:

– 96% of millennials have joined a social network.

– Social media has overtaken porn as the number one activity on the web.

– 1 out of 8 couples married in US met via social media.

– The fastest growing segment on Facebook is females 55 to 65 years old

Fizzik: A new baby in the world of browser !

0

You don’t see many startups these days trying to innovate with new Internet browsers. After all, that’s an area dominated by the likes of Microsoft, Google, Mozilla and Apple. So, I was immediately intrigued when I bumped into a new browser which not only provides you all the features available with most of the browsers these days, but goes miles away in terms of multi tasking and smoothness. While exploring further about the company, named  Spry Hive Industries, I found that team of ex-Microsoft workers have built a new browser called Fizzik, which is entering a public beta today. Here’s the demo

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QIrKcAU8lR0&feature=player_embedded]

As you can see in the video, the most interesting feature is the split-screen functionality which integrates content from YouTube, Twitter or other content sources. Is that enough to win you over?

India may have internet domain names in 7 local languages by the end of 2011

1

India plans to have internationalised domain names (IDN) on internet in seven local languages — Hindi, Bengali, Punjabi, Urdu, Tamil, Telugu and Gujarati — by the end of 2011. Once implemented, this would see the present country code ‘.in’ being replaced with ‘.bharat’. IDNs are currently available only in Latin characters, the script in which English and most other European languages are written.

The department of information technology (DIT), government of India, will soon submit its proposal to US-based Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), a non-profit organisation responsible for managing the internet’s domain name system.

According to DIT senior director Govind, at present only 10 per cent of India’s total population knows English and only English speaking population can access the internet. The country has currently 81 million internet users out of which only 8.1 million are broadband customers.

“Considering the population of the country, the number is not satisfactory. Once the domain name is available in regional languages, it will not only help the masses in sharing information but also help in internet proliferation even in remote corners of the country,” Govind has said.

Why Intel Will Be a Mobile Loser

0

Intel, as it’s wont to do, overnight made a splashy unveiling of a new family of processors: the Atom Z6xx series, whose chips are much more powerful than current versions but consume less power. Why the hoopla?

Apparently these chips, which run at over 1.5 GHz, can be used to power not only smartphones but also tablets. So as I usually do when a public company announces major news, I checked Intel’s stock price in pre-market trading: largely unchanged from its closing price the day before. If this was supposed to be such a big deal, why was the market ignoring it, and responding by shrugging its proverbial shoulders?

Indian Tech biggies in race for $38 billion outsourcing deals

0

Top IT firms in India like Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Infosys and Wipro are busy chasing multi-billion contracts from customers including China Mobile, Verizon US and Bharti Airtel, against multinational rivals as reported by ET.

As per one research by outsourcing experts firms such as Ovum said around 500 contracts worth nearly $37.5 billion are set to expire by September this year, ranging anywhere between $1 million and $1 billion each. “It’s a long, tough summer,” said a senior official at one of the Indian tech firms exploring opportunities at telecom majors such as China Mobile and Verizon. “Coming out of recession, we are facing perhaps the toughest sales challenge ever — the deals are smaller, competition is breathing down our necks and there is this huge expectation that we are back to normal,” he added, requesting anonymity.

Larger offshore vendors, which now include the likes of HP, IBM, and Accenture, are likely to bid for a number of contractual opportunities, said Jens Butler, principal analyst at Ovum. “Cost-cutting is not the only theme, it is a component of client requirements,” added Mr Butler, who is based in Sydney, Australia.

Not to forget that due to recession lots of contracts which are due for renewal went on hold last year. Since the market has been stabilized, companies are looking further to renew the same but with those companies who can offer a better deal than previous ones in terms of commercial, services, and flexibility. All this because of tight budget and possibilities of further negotiated T&C.

At the other hand, various SMBs are also keeping an eye on these deals to get a pie. Most of the biggies who are likely to be awarded few deals have started engagements with such SMBs to ensure the low commercials and high-profit margin by outsourcing these deals to right companies in turn.

Fake & Stolen Facebook Accounts are on Sale !!!

0

Researchers from iDefense Labs, a division of VeriSign, has tracked an effort to sell login data for 1.5 million Facebook accounts on several online criminal marketplaces, including Carder.su. According to Rick Howard, director, cyber intelligence, iDefense, a hacker, who used the screen name ‘kirllos’, was recently offering to sell bundles of 1,000 Facebook accounts with 10 or fewer friends for $25 and with more than 10 friends for $45.

Criminals steal login data for Facebook accounts, typically with ‘phishing’ techniques that trick users into disclosing their passwords or with malware that logs computer keystrokes. They then use the accounts to send spam, distribute malicious programmes and run identity and confidence fraud. Facebook accounts are attractive because of the higher level of trust on the site than exists in the broader internet, reports Economic Times.

Windows 7 based Project got killed !

3

With the end of April, one of the most anticipated project by HP has been end, reported by TechCrunch. It has been informed by TechCrunch that Hewlett-Packard allmost killed off its much ballyhooed Windows 7 tablet computer, says a source who’s been briefed on the matter.

The device was first unveiled by Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer at CES 2010 in January and was supposed to hit the market in mid 2010. But source from TechCrunch informed that HP is not satisfied with Windows 7 as a tablet operating system and has terminated the project (something CrunchGear mentioned months ago).

HP may also be abandoning Intel-based hardware for its slate lineup simply because it’s too power hungry. That would also rule out Windows 7 as an operating system.

So what will HP use as an operating system? Look for Google-powered devices, which have already been announced. And HP really does seem determined to make a go of the Palm WebOS. They said how important it was to them yesterday, and they will likely experiment with porting it to a slate-type device.

Will WebOS emerge as a successful operating system for tablet devices? That seems very unlikely given the dominance of the closed Apple OS and the likely success of the open Android and Chrome operating systems from Google. To get traction from third party developers with WebOS HP will need to sell a lot of units. And it’s not clear what they’d gain from all that effort, anyway. HP knows how to build and sell hardware, not operating systems.

Let us know your comments on actual story behind. Here’s the video promoting the HP Windows tablet from January:
