With 5% Penetration in One Year, Tablet Market is Set To Sparkle

0

For a product which has just celebrated its first anniversary, growth ratio and market share may not be that much important aspect to discuss about. However, when it comes to Tablet, almost everyone has been stunned from the Neilson’s latest research which reveals only 5% market penetration of Tablets despite of such enormous success, hype and demand.

Of all the mobile devices that have hit the market in last one year, Tablet has been at most demanding position primarily driven by Apple’s iPad. Though, other companies like HTC, Acer, HP, Samsung and LG are gearing up to launch their own set of Tablets – either running on Android or in-house platform –  market is expected to witness significant growth by end of this year.

As per the Nielsen’ survey on 12,000 U.S. consumers, 4.8 percent reported they owned a tablet in the first quarter of this year. Meanwhile, among other mobile devices, smartphones led the way with 36-percent penetration, followed by media players (13 percent), e-readers (nine percent) and netbooks (eight percent).

While the figures put Tablet at the last position, the growth is phenomenon – if we compare to other similar products penetration – especially because of Apple iPad which first got launched in April 2010. While the first e-reader, the Kindle debuted way back in late 2007, just 3 percent of people have claimed to own the device by first quarter of last year, according to Neilson. Netbooks, which have also been around for several years, were at 5.8 percent in the first quarter last year.

A comparative analysis between Tablets and other competitive products justifies the 4.8% tablet penetration and claims it indeed a good show. Interestingly, these figures are results despite of limited delivery of iPad and limited existence of Tablets from other companies.

In March this year Apple has launched the up-scaled version of Tablet – iPad 2 and Google has also given a shift to market by announcing Tablet specific platform Gingerbread. This has transformed the Tablet war to a new direction and companies have announced dual core processor for all upcoming Tablets.  This has narrowed the gap between Tablet and entry-level PC’s and Laptops. Consequently, good numbers of people are expected to dump the idea of owning PCs and are turning for Tablets this year.

Also, with the growing range in Tablet devices, price war of expected to trigger somewhere in second half of this year which will only attract more people towards Tablets who are cost-conscious.

With ongoing innovation in Tablet market, next one year is going to be flourishing for companies. There are still lots of rooms to grow and with close to 5% growth in just one year, Tablet is proving to be a promising bet for now.

Has Twitter Really Surpassed 300 Million User Mark? A Realistic Analysis!

0

Twitter has just surpassed 300 million user mark and heading for more strengthen position by adding 8.2 new users each passing second. Though these figures are not straight from horse’s mouth it has been analyzed well by Twitter account tracker Twopcharts, who calculates the data based on registered Used IDs.

I am not betting big on such figures are I have never heard of Twopcharts ever before nor I have dogged their other analysis’ before. The other reason which is making me to have second thought on such figures is Twitter’s official announcement of passing 200 million marks just 2 months back in February. And if Twopcharts figures can be justified anyhow, then undoubtedly it’s an enormous success for Twitter.

Surprisingly, I have not seen any official reaction on twitter on any such speculation before. Absolutely I have no clue on what is holding Twitter to announce their progression periodically. But if the company decides to do so, it would be allowed social media industry analysts, like us, to have better control over figures and could have far effective market forecast.

Unlike Facebook, Twitter is, apparently, anxious towards various aspects of the whole business model. The recent love-hate story between Twitter and UberMedia has already been gained ‘no welcome’ attention. Consequently, Twitter settled down with TweetDeck acquisition and UberMedia with the plan of Twitter alternative.

However, we can only expect to see the substantial difference when these figures will be tested on the grounds of actual active users.

What If You Die: This Facebook App Will Tell to Whole World–Automatically!

1

Have you ever thought what will happen to your online properties which are protected by some password known by you only? Furthermore how your huge friends list will get updated instantly about your death and there will be no rooms for miscreants to take advantage about such situation? Here is an interesting solution or rather a unique Facebook app, got released recently, which not only track your death but also update to all your Facebook friends about the situation.

This app works from the website www.ifidie.net which is interconnected with a Facebook app and instantly ask permission to allow access when you will first visit the ifidie.net (Don’t consider this as a spam). The application has the capability to record a message – which you would like to broadcast post death – in text and video format both. You need to nominate three people from your Facebook friends list who will report about your demise. Once confirmed by all three, you would be announced dead on your Facebook account.

Though, the nature of application is very vital in our life, the role of the nominees is equally crucial who will have authority to report the dead. I am not sure how far Facebook users will adopt the service from this app – especially when it works post death – but to gain traction, company has already launched a campaign which is randomly calling people and frightening them about their lives and requesting them to visit www.ifidie.net. Campaign video after this break :

“Intel Inside” Smartphones by Early 2012

0

Despite of substantial setback by recent marriage between Microsoft and Nokia, Intel is in no mood to slow down for its mobile initiatives – atleast for the Smartphone chip section. The world’s largest chip maker Intel will be ready to sit inside Smartphones by early next year, the company’s CEO Paul Otellini revealed today to investors.

Otellini also rejected all speculations about adopting rival manufacturer ARM’s technology for the mobile chipsets. Intel currently holds around 80% of the world Pc’s through its chipset. However, the story is not the same when in mobile device industry which is already going through major transformation due to aggressive adoption of Smartphones and Tablets. Competitors like Qualcomm and Nvidia are dominating the emerging mobile device market.

Analysts feel that Intel’s chip debut for mobile devices in early 2012 is indeed a late initiative. In next one year company will have to go through ridged war due to partial stabilization in mobile industry.

According to Otellini, ARM’s technology adoption will not favor Intel by any ways. This will only push the company to subsidize their product price and keep them in restrictive mode in terms of scalability and growth. He also feel that going along with ARM will lower the overall profit and company has the ability to do much better by its own.

In last one year Intel has invested heavily in mobile device technology and working with several smartphone and Tablet manufacturers. Intel’s latest chip in the Atom family, called Medfield, will be power efficient and powerful enough to compete in the fast-growing smartphone market.

Intel also demonstrated a new chip manufacturing architecture earlier this month. The Tri-Gate 3D transistor design allow the chips to be smaller than before and consume less electricity. Both are good selling points for mobile technology.

Beware Windows Users: Your Next Download May Be Malicious

0

If you are fascinated towards new apps and frequently downloads various tools, components or software from millions of websites for your windows machine then you must be very precautions here after. Recently, Microsoft has claimed that every 14th program downloaded by Windows users turns out to be malicious. The disclosure has put billions of windows users across various platforms at security alert.

In recent time companies have done substantial investment towards security and data protection. All modern browsers and websites are packed with security features desired to steer users away from any unknown and potentially untrustworthy software. However, despite of such security attentiveness and measures, about 5% of users continue to ignore the warnings and got-ahead to download malicious Trojan horse program only to put their confidential data and personal information on risk.

Interestingly, Hackers also understand and study such security measurements. Consequently, the new method known as social hacking is gaining constant popularity to ditch latest security fences. This is how the recent Facebook spam target millions of facebook users worldwide. Hackers tempt users to install or allow access for their malicious software through disguised messages as an interesting story or video about hot news such as death of Osama bin laden. When Symantec tracked the 50 most common malicious programs last year, it found that 56 percent of all attacks included Trojan horse programs.

Hackers have become more target oriented instead of throwing generic malicious software on web. They are adopting the spearphising route to which is meant to design for a specific target or task.

Industry analysts feel that though the open web has become a tough entry gate for hackers, social media has emerged as an alternative and probably the more effective route of such illegal activities – especially in last two years. With the success of Facebook and twitter which holds close to 800 million users together, Hackers are finding it easy to target such huge target numbers through single malicious on social media.

Microsoft is aware about all threats and constantly working on scenarios to reduce the future impact and effectiveness of hackers on its Windows platform. With latest Internet Explorer 9.0 and upcoming Security patch of Windows 7, company is only expecting to control the damages till a greater extent. However, social media giants like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn also need to step up with their security arrangements and data screening to have combined success.

Google’s New Offering in Cloud: Google Chrome Book

1

Google Inc. has ramped up its commitment to cloud computing with the announcement that it is working on a new range of Chrome books – which will use the firm’s cloud-based Chrome OS.

The personal computer will run on Google’s Chrome operating system, which is cloud-enabled. The news source reports that the system will allow users to access popular virtual applications, including Google Docs and Google Business Apps.

All the applications and storage they require will be hosted in the cloud by Google.

Chrome OS, the search-engine giant’s Web-based platform for computers, eschews the traditional, localized platform and long-running BIOS startup process of Microsoft Windows laptops for Web applications and machines with minimal Flash storage that load within 8 seconds.

There will be several administrative advantages to the Chrome book, which will be rented out to companies for $28 a month, states the media organization. Administrators will have complete control over their networks, which may greatly boost the security measures of a company’s cloud service.

Essentially, the announcement by Google signifies its commitment to the enterprise hardware side of cloud computing. Previously, the online search engine offered applications for cloud service providers to integrate into their stacks. The overwhelming public and enterprise success of these applications may have played a large role in the company’s decision to pursue more cloud-centric business strategies.

Google has already signed up a number of partners – including Samsung and Acer – to produce the new devices.

Google claims the Chrome book’s cloud will be a secure system. Its OS platform will implement key security measures for the new enterprise hardware, including automatic updates, data encryption and recovery services.

Privacy and security has remained a big issue for Cloud computing especially after Sony’s massive data security breach just a few weeks ago. Can Google deliver its promise on security? We will have to wait and watch.

Why Is Apple Dominating in Enterprise Users Segment-Despite Android’s Massive Adoption?

1

Google’s Android may be riding high with recent success and massive adoption by most of the mobile devices manufacturers, like Samsung, LG, Acer, Toshiba, Motorola and Sony Ericsson, but Apple’s iOS has emerged as most preferred mobile platform among enterprise users. Apple has dominated the Enterprise Tablet and Smartphone segment with sizable margin and iPad has emerged as most preferred device for communication.

As per Intermedia, a Microsoft Exchange hosting provider, 61% of all ActiveSync – capable Smartphones activated by its 320,000 enterprise customers were iPhones, compare to only 17 devices on Android. Surprisingly, iPad has carried out the number which is far better than any of its closest competitors in Tablet segment for enterprise users.

In Smartphone story, Apple grew its market share to 64% in April while Android managed to double only to reach 33% of all devices bought online during the month. Intermedia don’t measure the market share of BlackBerry devices as it doesn’t support ActiveSync.

In Tablet segment Apple has almost wiped out competition. Apple’s iPad recorded 900 and 1,200 activation in the month of March and April, as noticed by Intermedia. Apple secured 99.8% of all new Tablet activations only to leave tiny fraction for other devices like Smasung Galaxy Tab, Motorola Xoom and Huawei X7.

Apple’s success in the enterprise can be attributed to its ability to bring the iPad to market as a finished product with a smooth and dependable user experience, something Google has been unable to do thus far with its Android operating system. Enterprise IT is far less likely to take risks on an unproven platform than consumers, and while Android is a proven hit with consumers; it still hasn’t shown itself to be on par with iOS in terms of OS stability, regardless of whether you’re looking only at tablets, or at smartphones as well.

There are reports to point security issues with Android platform which have become major blow to Google. In the ecosystem of enterprise communication and information, companies don’t prefer work with less secure environment due to severity of the data. Finally, Android OS fragmentation is a considerable issue when it comes to being able to provide comprehensive IT support.

Indeed, Android is slowly narrowing gap with Apple but when in various aspects of mobile industry but Apple has done pretty decent job by maintaining growth and magnetism among enterprise users industry. By this year-end, it would be interesting to see how Apple and Google will stand with their market share with every aspect of mobile Industry

Lady Gaga Achieves 10 Million Twitter Followers Milestone

1

It’s a big day for Lady Gaga – and for Twitter – as the mammoth milestone of 10 million followers has been finally achieved. Indeed, it’s a very impressive achievement as Gaga is getting followed by almost 6% of overall twitter users. As per March 2011, Twitter was claiming to have close to 175 million users worldwide.

Interestingly, Justin Bieber is no far from Gaga. He is quite close to replicate the same milestone anytime this month. Justin has constantly narrowed the gap with Gaga in last couple of months. To achieve this milestone Gaga had to tweet only 735 times.

Surely, this will be known as a great milestone in Twitter’s history, too. Way back in April 2009, Ashton Kutcher grabbed much expected attention when he achieved the status of being the first personality on twitter with 1 million followers.

Apparently, Gaga has become the most popular celebrity – atleast on social media – where she accumulates more than 44 million fans and followers. Gaga currently has more than 34 million fans on Facebook. Though, Twitter’s followers are much lower compare to Facebook fans but ratio remains same for Twitter and Facebook. Against 685 million Facebook users and 175 million Twitter users, Gaga has attracted 34 million fans and 10 million followers which stands 5% of respective social network.

Cloud Computing: Advantage OR Illusion [INFOGRAPHIC]

0

The harmony over cloud computing has been vetted by many industry experts and undoubtedly, it has changed the ecosystem of computing in last one decade. Robust connectivity and accessibility of data has given major push among people to leverage on Cloud. However, the moment you touch cloud – be it email, online banking, social media activity – in hit back a server located at Data Center. Like any hungry beast Data Center, responsible to produce and transit billions of megabytes of data every second, pull more energy and which in-turn has substantial impact on environment.

ABB – experts in Data Center power computation automation – has released an interesting Infographic which showcases the illusion (rather indirect) of cloud computing advantages through non-optimized Data Centers.

Just few days back we had exposed another remarkable infographic which exposes how Internet is subsidizing the growth of planet. The Infograhic challenges the Internet for its down-sides impact over planet, through search queries, emails and other Internet based activities.

Post Osama Reaction: How Safe People Feel [INFOGRAPHIC]

1

Even ten days after the late-night announcement on May 1st, 2011, the death of Osama Bin Laden is still a hot topic on many news shows. It is a story with an endless cache of angles, twists, retracted statements and tongue twisting names (Osama/Obama—say it 10 times fast!). The below infographic, released by Good Morning, culls the answers to a USA Today/Gallop Poll survey questioning Americans’ post-Osama feelings.

According to the poll, 54% of Americans feel that the U.S. is safer after Bin Laden’s death. To the question of importance, 1% of Americans responded humorously that it was “not at all important” that Osama Bin Laden was killed. Also interesting is who respondents feel deserves the most credit: 89% back the U.S. Military.

As one chapter in American history closes and almost instantly reopens with further chaos and unrest in the Middle East, it is good to see Americans questioning and developing opinions about the events of the past nine and a half years. Especially when those opinions come in the form of a nifty graphic

Facebook Does It Again: Leaked Personal Data For Years

0

Time and again, Facebook is at center of criticism for accidentally leaking personal information of users to advertisers and other third parties for years. It has been learned by Symantec that Facebook was unintentionally giving way for hackers to gain access over thousands of users’ profile from last four years – Since company started offering applications on its platform in 2007.

The unintended access included Photos, profile, chat and the ability to post message and mine personal information. Though, Facebook has claimed to address this issue and denied to obtain any evidence that any actual data was leaked due to such flaw, it puts the company’s services & security measures back on debate board.

Symantec has claimed that “security process which allows access to any third-party application” holds (was) major flaw. However, there are chances that many third-party app developers didn’t realize such security threat.

Generally Facebook assigns a “Token” to every third-party application using which app can access user’s information. These tokens are valid for certain time duration – in some cases until user change his password. Though, Facebook has started using OAUTH2.0, legacy authorization system is still in place and getting used by many app developers. Symantec explains that possible leak of these tokens happens when user get redirected to permission page through a client side redirect with this token code integrated in URL using normal HTTP access.

To encounter this exposure Facebook has released a clarification email stating “We’ve conducted a thorough investigation which revealed no evidence of this issue resulting in a user’s private information being shared with unauthorized third parties,” Interestingly, they didn’t bother to mention how exactly the company conducted its study.

Earlier, Facebook has been criticized several times for various security loop holes and failing to take adequate measurement for users’ personal date. In January this year, it was Mark Zuckerberg – CEO of Facebook – who faced the heat when his fan page got hacked with the message “Let the hacking begin: If Facebook needs money, instead of going to the banks, why doesn’t Facebook let its users invest in Facebook in a social way? Why not transform Facebook into a ‘social business’ the way Nobel Prize winner Muhammad Yunus described it? [LINK] What do you think? #hackercup2011″.

Facebook has recently announced an update to their Developer RoadMap. The details of this update can be found here: https://developers.facebook.com/blog/post/497
