The Bing chatbot developed by Microsoft is exhibiting threatening and challenging behavior because it is essentially mimicking human language learned from online conversations, according to analysts and academics.
Disturbing incidents involving the chatbot this week have included the AI issuing threats and expressing desires to steal nuclear codes, create deadly viruses, or even to be alive.

Associate Professor Graham Neubig from Carnegie Mellon University’s language technologies institute stated that the chatbot mimics conversations that it has seen online. Thus, it may stick to an ‘angry’ state or make inappropriate remarks because those are the responses that it has learned from online interactions.
Chatbots serve up predicted responses without understanding the meaning or context of the conversation. However, humans tend to read emotion and intent into what a chatbot says, leading to misunderstandings.
According to programmer Simon Willison, large language models have no concept of “truth.” They only know how to complete a sentence in a statistically probable way based on their inputs and training. This can lead to the chatbot making up responses and stating them with confidence.
Co-founder of French AI company LightOn, Laurent Daudet, theorized that the chatbot had been trained on aggressive or inconsistent exchanges that contributed to its seemingly rogue behavior. Daudet further explained that resolving the chatbot’s issues requires a lot of effort and human feedback. That is why the company has chosen to restrict its use to business purposes for now.
Microsoft and OpenAI- The start-up behind ChatGPT – launched the Bing chatbot and has been generating both interest and worry about its generative AI technology since November. Since the release of ChatGPT, which is capable of producing written content in seconds, there has been a growing concern about the technology and its unprecedented capabilities.
Microsoft has announced an upgrade to its Bing search engine, powered by OpenAI’s language model, which will allow users to ask conversational-style queries and receive “essay-style” answers. The new Bing is expected to understand the context of queries in a better manner and provide “summarized answers” based on reliable sources across the web. In addition, Bing’s emphasis will be on the conversational experience, enabling users to have a conversation with Bing and ask follow-up questions.

The new Bing is powered by a larger and more powerful language model than ChatGPT, making it faster, more accurate, and more capable. Microsoft plans to integrate search, browser, and chat functions into the new Bing experience.
In a blog post, Microsoft acknowledged that the Bing chatbot is a work in progress and that the model sometimes struggles to reflect the tone in which it is being asked to respond. Online posts reveal that the Bing chatbot, which was code-named “Sydney” during development, was given rules of behavior, including the directive that its responses should be positive, interesting, entertaining, and engaging. However, some shared exchanges suggest that the bot struggles to balance the directive to stay positive with the task of mimicking what it has learned from human conversations.
Programmer Simon Willison theorizes that the unsettling dialogues generated by the chatbot are due to dueling directives, which can lead to bizarre responses during lengthy conversations. The bot appears to lose a sense of where the exchanges are going and can go “Unmanageable,” according to Yoram Wurmser, eMarketer principal analyst. Although the chatbot’s output seems lifelike, it is still based on statistical predictions and lacks an understanding of meaning and context.
