Smartphone Shipments in India by Top Vendors: Q1 2017 – Q4 2020

The below graph represents the quarterly distribution of smartphone shipments in India by top vendors, starting from Q1 2017 to Q4 2020. Among the top 5 vendors, Samsung recorded the highest 35% YoY growth in its smartphone shipments in India during the December quarter. While Xiaomi remained the leader of the market, as per IDC data.

The above graph represents the smartphone shipments in India by top vendors, starting from Q1 2017 to Q4 2020. The list of top five smartphone brands in India in Q4 2020 includes Xiaomi, Samsung, Vivo, Realme and Oppo, according to IDC. About 44.8 million units of smartphones were shipped in India during the fourth quarter of 2020, with an impressive 21% YoY growth.

Due to Covid-19 pandemic, the India smartphone shipments declined a strong 50.6% YoY during the second quarter, to 18.2 million units. All top 5 vendors witnessed huge decline in the smartphone shipments.

Note: Xiaomi remained India’s top smartphone vendor in Q3 2020, according to IDC. However, the report by Counterpoint Research shows that Samsung regained the top spot.

Xiaomi continues to dominate the India smartphone market in Q3 2020, with total 13.5 million units shipped. However, the year-over-year growth was only 7.1%. Interestingly, the three out of top five best-selling smartphones in India in Q3 2020 came from Xiaomi, named Redmi 8A Dual, Redmi 8, and Redmi Note 9.

Samsung, which overtook Vivo to become India’s second biggest smartphone manufacture in Q2 2020, recorded a strong 38.1% YoY growth in Q3 2020. The Korean giant shipped 12.1 million units during the third quarter, accounting for 15% of its global shipments. The Samsung Galaxy M21 and M31 were among the India’s top 5 best-selling models in Q3 2020.

Vivo smartphone shipments in India grew 27.4% YoY in Q3 2020, to 9 million units. With a 29% share, Vivo regained the top spot in the offline channel, ahead of Samsung. Interestingly, the affordable Vivo Y series continued to garner the majority of its volumes, though the stock issues remained due Coronavirus lockdown in the country.

Realme remained the fourth largest smartphone manufacturer, with 8 million units shipped during third quarter of 2020. The company recorded an appreciable 19.1% YoY growth in its shipments in Q3 2020, compared to a strong 37% YoY decline in Q2 2020. Interestingly, with 23% share, Realme also regained the second spot in the online channel, ahead of Samsung.

One must note that in Q1 2020, Realme overtook Oppo to become the fourth largest smartphone player in India, with 4.3 million units shipped.

Oppo India shipped 6.1 million units during Q3 2020, with 11.3% YoY growth. The growth was primarily driven by Oppo A12, A53, and A11K which performed quite well during the quarter. With an 18% share, Oppo regained its third position in the offline channel, following vivo and Samsung.
