Smartphone Shipments in India by Top Vendors: Q1 2017 – Q2 2020

The list of top five smartphone brands in India in Q2 2020 includes Xiaomi, Samsung, Vivo, Realme and Oppo, according to IDC. Due to Covid-19 pandemic, the India smartphone shipments declined a strong 50.6% YoY during the second quarter, to 18.2 million units. All top 5 vendors witnessed huge decline in the smartphone shipments.

Xiaomi continues to dominate the India smartphone market in Q2 2020, with total 5.4 million units shipped. The Chinese player recorded a strong 48.7% YoY decline in its smartphone shipments. Interestingly, the four out of top five best-selling smartphones in India in Q2 2020 came from Xiaomi, named Redmi Note 8A Dual, Note 8, Note 9 Pro, and Redmi 8.

Samsung overtook Vivo to become India’s second biggest smartphone manufacture, with 4.8 million units shipped. Surprisingly, this was despite recorded a strong 48.5% YoY decline in its smartphone shipments during Q2 2020. The Samsung Galaxy M21 was among the India’s top 5 best-selling models in Q2 2020.

Vivo smartphone shipments in India declined a whopping 42.9% YoY in Q2 2020, to 3.2 million units. However, it retained the fourth position in India’s online channel on the back of its Z/U series. Interestingly, the affordable Vivo Y series continued to garner the majority of its volumes, though the stock issues remained due Coronavirus lockdown in the country.

Realme remained the fourth largest smartphone manufacturer, with 1.8 million units shipped during Q2 2020. Due to the stock issues, the vendor witnessed a strong 37% YoY decline in its shipments. Its affordable C3/C2 accounted for 36.3% of Realme’s total shipments, followed by the newly launched Narzo series. In Q1 2020, Realme overtook Oppo to become the fourth largest smartphone player in India, with 4.3 million units shipped.

Surprisingly, among the top 5, Oppo recorded the highest YoY decline in its smartphone shipments during the June quarter. Oppo smartphone shipments in India declined to 1.8 million units in Q2 2020, from 3.6 million units in the year-ago period. That shows a whopping 51% YoY decline.
