One must note that WhatsApp MAUs worldwide crossed the 1000-million mark for the first time in February 2016. That represented nearly one in seven people on Earth using WhatsApp every month to stay in touch with their friends and family.

In April 2013, about 200 million people were actively using the WhatsApp messaging app on a monthly basis, which increased a whopping 150% YoY to reach 500 million in April 2014. The growth was primarily driven by countries like Brazil, India, Mexico, and Russia. This was the first time when the number of monthly active WhatsApp users crossed the 500-million mark, globally. In just one year, the company reported over 800 million global MAUs, with 60% YoY growth.

In September 2015, nearly one billion or 900 million people around the world were using WhatsApp every month. Soon after that, the company announced dropping the $1 subscription fee plan for using WhatsApp after their first year.
