TikTok Smartphone Confirmed: What Is ByteDance Upto With It?

Must Read

The TikTok smartphone would soon be a reality!

The Tiktok makers are going to have a new offering soon in the form of a new smartphone. It has been known for some time that the company was going to come up with a smartphone in the near future. ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, has confirmed its plans for a new smartphone after closing a deal with device maker Smartisan Technology. It did not come as a surprise but what does the Chinese mobile app development company want by launching a smartphone?

Let us look at it in a little more detail.

TikTok Smartphone: Made By Smartisan Technologies

Smartisan Technologies is a multinational technology company which specialises in designing consumer electronic devices and online services. While the company itself has been labelled as a niche player in the smartphone business, the CEO of the company has a different story altogether. Before turning into the founder and CEO of a smartphone startup, he was an English teacher. And now, he aims to be the next Steve Jobs of China. Known for his characteristic flamboyance, he epitomises what his company stands for.

Now, as Bytedance has confirmed, Smartisan had plans to come up with a new smartphone long before the Bytedance deal. The upcoming smartphone has already been seven months into development. But the question begs, what’s in it for Bytedance?

Smartphones: The Next Step for Bytedance?

Bytedance has been gaining a lot of influence and popularity in recent times. Its applications have gained users and following not just in China but all around the world. Douyin, the company’s short video streaming app, has almost 300 million users in China on a monthly basis. The global counterpart of douyin, Tiktok, has been gaining popularity across North America. It was also the third most downloaded app in Q1 2019, posting a 70% growth year on year in the process. This has allowed the company to compete with the likes of Baidu. Therefore, taking this next step is might just turn them into the company of much larger scales.

The smartphone business might look brutal at this time due to the declining growth of the global smartphone industry. Bytedance might still be looking towards making its mark in it. TikTok itself already has about 800 million downloads worldwide. Therefore, Bytedance might be looking to release this smartphone with all of its apps pre-installed in it.

But is it enough to sustain in the smartphone market? Social media companies such as Facebook have spectacularly failed with such a venture. And they are not alone. E-commerce giant Amazon also tried the same with a new Fire phone, only to discontinue it a year later (it does have a new Ice Phone set to come out in the future).

Therefore, while such a move is risky, it does come with a high reward. Should their smartphone succeed, it will propel the company to another level in terms of revenue and reach.
