Within just 2 months of its launch, over 1 million people started using Instagram on a monthly basis.

Instagram was initially available for iOS users only. In April 2012, the photo-sharing app was made available for Android users, globally. Interestingly, in just one month, the number of monthly active Instagram users increased from 30 million to 50 million.

It was February 2013 when Instagram achieved the much-awaited milestone of 100 million users. It took Instagram little over a year to add another 100 million users to make the total count reach 200 million in March 2014.

Since then growth in the total users of Instagram has been exceptional. In just following 9 months, Instagram added an additional 100 million users and announced the total number of Instagram users clocking 300 million in December 2014.

By the mid of 2016 – within the following 18 months – the number of Instagram users crossed 500 million, marking the exploded adoption of the mobile photo and video sharing app.

On June 20, 2013, Facebook introduced a 15-sec video sharing feature on Instagram to attract advertisers.

On June 20, 2018, Instagram launched IGTV, a long-form video-sharing app, intended to compete against YouTube.
