It’s the second anniversary for Reliance Jio and the company is leaving no stone unturned to make it more memorable for its existing user base. To make it more adorable for Jio, Facebook’s owned Whatsapp has announced the availability of Whatsapp for Jio phones which millions of Jio customers have been missing for the last two years.
In a recent announcement made today by Whatsapp, all the Reliance Jio customers who own the top-selling Reliance Jio phones can now download Whatsapp on Jio phones without making its tweaks. The Facebook-owned messaging platform is available in a custom format to run on KaiOS operating system that powers all the Reliance Jio phones.
Whatsapp has assured that all the Jio customers can connect and chat securely as the Whatsapp for Jio phones offers a secure way to communicate. All the messages, chat, photos and video shared via Whatsapp for Jio phones will be encrypted end-to-end.
“By designing this new app for KaiOS, we hope to expand the ability for people to communicate with anyone in India and around the world by offering the best messaging experience possible to JioPhone users,” said Chris Daniels, Vice President, WhatsApp.
Over 200 million mobile phone users in India use Reliance Jio phones. Initially, Reliance Jio tried to hook them up with the in-house developed Jio-Chat messaging app. However, the growing popularity and features of Whatsapp kept Jio users missing Whatsapp. However, bringing Whatsapp on Jio Phones was technically challenging, considering the specification of the device and the operating system Jio phones are powered with. With the tailored made Whatsapp, all the Reliance Jio users can now enjoy the connectivity of Whatsapp.

However, it’s going to take around 10 days of time for the company to make it available for all the Jio phones. The company has promised that by September 20, 2018 all the Jio Phones would be compatible with the WhatsApp specially designed for Jio Phones.
Indeed it’s a strategic move by WhatsApp as well. The unprecedented growth of Reliance Jio in India has attracted the eyeballs of Whatsapp management. The Facebook-owned company is committed it swell its users base with each passing quarter and by making the app available for all the Jio Phones, WhatsApp could easily add up over 150 million users – if not all customers download WhatsApp on Jip Phones – to its user base in the third quarter of the year. Currently, WhatsApp has over 1.5 billion users worldwide.
