WhatsApp Change Number Feature: A Long Due, Much Needed

Must Read

WhatsApp is rolling out a new feature that was long due and needed by those who keep juggling with or upgrading new smartphones devices very frequently. The enhancement in WhatsApp Change Number feature will allow users to access their WhatsApp data, including chat history and image, on a new device without going through the tedious process of device-to-device migration.

Though the ‘Change Number‘ feature was already there in WhatsApp for some time but users were not finding it much useless due to the absence of a proper migration process. The new Change Number will allow WhatsApp users to change their number and notify to all or some of the contacts.

It also creates a separate instance of chat history in the recipients’ phone to avoid duplicity of chat transcripts. Going further when a WhatsApp user decides to change his number, all he has to do is verify his new number and select the recipients he wants to notify about the change.

Once a WhatsApp user selects contacts he wants to notify about his new number, his chat transcript in recipients phone will automatically be moved to a new one with a bubble, indicating that the user has got a new number.

Undoubtedly the enhancement in Change Number feature of WhatsApp is a welcome move. A number of users carry the same number for calling as well as for WhatsApp, and when those users change their number they find informing their WhatsApp contacts a daunting task. Going further WhatsApp users could either notify all of their WhatsApp contacts or few selected ones about their new number.

The feature is currently in beta stage though, and that’s why it is available only for Android users. The company has planned to roll out the new Change Number feature to iOS and Windows Phone users after some time.

WhatsApp has been reportedly working to enhance its users’ experience for a long time. This could be just the first iteration of many new exciting features that the company has planned to roll out in the upcoming months. With 1.5 billion users, WhatsApp is the widely used mobile messaging platform in the world.
