The wait is over; Mobile World Congress In India is here!

After years of being neglected, India is going to host the world’s largest and the most popular conference on mobile technologies – Mobile World Congress. According to Business Standard, citing PTI, The GSM Association, the organisers of Mobile World Congress, has agreed to collaborate for the three-day event with Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI). The three-day event is scheduled to kick off on September 27 at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi.

India will only be the third country, after Barcelona and Shanghai, which has got a chance to host Mobile World Congress (MWC). The flagship MWC event takes place in Feb-March every year in Barcelona, which attracts all leading brands, leaders, speakers and media houses across the globe. The Mobile World Conference for 2017 was just concluded on 2nd March 2017 and now organisers have set their eyes on the upcoming MWC in Shanghai, scheduled for 28 June – 1 July 2017.

Mobile World Congress India 2017

The GSM Association is yet to announce the upcoming Mobile World Congress India 2017 on its website, but COAI Director General Rajan S Mathew has already informed the media about the decision.

“There is Mobile World Congress in Barcelona and an edition in Shanghai. There is nothing in between for South East Asia. India is emerging as one of the global leaders in telecom which we will also showcase in the Indian Mobile Congress,” COAI Director General Rajan S Mathews told PTI.

The Government of India is apparently betting big on Mobile World Congress. COAI representatives have already started approaching all the leading brands Including Facebook, Huawei, Cisco, Ericsson, who have got a significant market presence in the country. India, being the second largest country by mobile subscribers and Internet users, is a strategic market for all the global brands who have created a strong foothold. Besides, the low penetration of smartphone and internet – as compare to some of the largest markets including US and China – India portrays a big window of opportunity for companies.

To make the first Mobile World Congress In India a grand success, the officials have already approaching officials of other governments as well as trade ministries of British and Swedish Government.

Mobile World Congress in India, which will reportedly be called India Mobile Congress (IMC), is expected to attract hundreds of thousands of delegates from the mobile industry to the event. Considering the number of Visa issues for Barcelona every year during Feb-March India government is quite excited and optimistic about the success of India Mobile Congress (IMC).

Dazeinfo, which was one of the proud partners of Mobile World Congress 2017 and extended its support and intelligence to the conference, is committed to play a major role in the IMC.

Update: To surprise everyone, GSMA has completely rejected any claim of collaboration with COAI for the India World Congress scheduled for September 2016. It would be interesting see how the chairman of COAI responds to the development, which has put him in a very odd situation. The best guess, probably PTI has mixed up IMC and MWC, which may be two separate events.
