Will Samsung’s Secret Phone Redefine The Smartphone Industry?

Must Read

Samsung is reportedly working on its second foldable smartphone which is set to come out early next year. This new smartphone, however, will be different from the already released Galaxy Fold as it will have the ability to fold into a compact square. The folding mechanism used here is not too dissimilar to that used to the flip phone back in the day. The inner display this time will span over 6.7 inches, with the folding mechanism akin to that of a clamshell.

But will this device experience a better market response than its predecessor? Samsung has certainly tried to take steps to make sure of that by adding quite a lot of differences than Galaxy Fold that got stuck into issues much before the public launch.

Let us look at it in a little more detail.

New Designer, Nostalgic Flips, and Much More

Samsung certainly created ripples around the world when it revealed the world’s first-ever foldable smartphone at a Samsung developer conference in 2018. However, this upcoming smartphone is even more different than the Galaxy Fold.

As has been mentioned earlier, the new foldable smartphone has a clamshell-like folding mechanism, different from that of the Galaxy Fold. But other than that, the South Korean electronics giant is looking to improve the overall design of the smartphone. For this purpose, it has collaborated with American designer Thom Browne, so as to appeal to a wider and more fashion-concerned consumer base through its design side. Since Samsung’s new foldable smartphone is going to put an emphasis on luxury, it is only fair to consider that the company is going to leave no expenses spared to make it look and function like the most wannabe device on the planet.

One other thing that works the favour of Samsung’s new secret phone is its similarity with the flip phone. For its techie consumer base, it is going to invoke a feeling of nostalgia, giving it a vintage yet modern appeal.

On the technological side, the new foldable phone from Samsung is going to sport a hole-punch selfie camera on the top of the inner display. It is going to have two cameras on the rear side which will become front-facing when the foldable smartphone is flipped close. Since it is going to have the dimensions of a smartphone when open, it will be able to run all Android apps in their native state. It is kind of a big deal with any foldable smartphone considering Galaxy Fold is not compatible with all apps since its dimensions are not similar.

Samsung Foldable Smartphones: Will It Be A Success?

This will be the second out of the three foldable smartphones that Samsung is going to manufacture and release in the times to come. The third one is going to fold outwards, unlike the ones before it. But a lot of its and the clamshell foldable smartphone’s success is going to depend on the success of the Galaxy Fold. Originally scheduled to be released in April, the Korean giant soon found out that the device cannot even stand days of conventional use without coming up with issues. But the company is trying its best to address the issues by developing an Ultra-Thin Glass (UTG) for its upcoming foldable smartphone, which is going to operate at just 3% thickness from the usual glass used to protect smartphones.

While the other companies marked to compete in the foldable smartphone business suffering from delays, Samsung has, practically, no competition to itself. But at the same time, the onus is upon them to create a market for a product as experimental and luxurious as this one.
