It is important to note that the worldwide growth of Facebook monthly users has been primarily driven by the APAC region. Another graph representing the growth in the number of Facebook users by region clearly highlights the regional contribution of APAC, Europe, US & Canada, and Rest of the World in the overall growth of Facebook users worldwide.

The year-over-year and quarter-over-quarter growth in the total number of Facebook monthly active users (MAUs) has been phenomenal between 2009 and 2017.

Q3 2010 was the first time when Facebook achieved its first 500 million global MAUs milestone. About 550 million people around the world were using Facebook on a monthly basis. That’s a whopping 80.3% YoY and 14.1% QoQ growth in Facebook MAUs.

In just two years, the company achieved another big milestone as the total MAUs count crossed 1000-million mark for the first time. In Q3 2012, about 1,007 million people, across different regions, logged in and visited Facebook, at least once in a month. That’s an appreciable 25.9% YoY and 5.5% QoQ increase in the global monthly active Facebook users.

The company took almost 5 years to achieve another milestone of crossing 2 billion MAUs. In fiscal Q2 2017, Facebook MAUs count has increased a notable 18.6% YoY to 2,006 million (2.01 billion), globally.

Note: Facebook defines its monthly active user as a registered Facebook user who logged in and visited Facebook through the website or a mobile device, or took an action to share content or activity with his/her Facebook friends or connections via a third-party website that is integrated with Facebook, in the last 30 days.
