Indian Broadband Subscriber Base Soaks 0.12% To Reach 15 Million In February 2013

In the wake of rising mobile penetration, the total broadband connections in India fell by 0.12% to 15 million at the end of February 2013; India did cross the benchmark of 15 Million broadband connections: there is a positive growth of 10.76% during the last one year from February 2012 to February 2013, according to Indian Telecom Regulator (TRAI).

Government owned BSNL with 9.90 million users ascended the broadband market succeeded by Bharti Airtel with 1.40 million and MTNL with 1.08 million subscribers.

TRAI, however said ” The deterioration in the wireless subscriber base has been witnessed since july 2012 due to detachment of inactive moblie subscribers by the telecom service providers.This  has gradually become less”.

According to the report, subscription base detoriated to 892.02 million at the end of February 2013 from 893.15 million at the end of January 2013, showing a monthly growth rate of -0.13%. Out of this wireless segment also showed a decrease from 862.62 million in January 2013 to 861.66 million at the end of February 2013. Wireless subscription in urban areas detoriated from 528.88 million in January 2013 to 521.29 million at the end of February 2013, on the contrary the wireless subscription increased from 333.74 million to 340.38 million during the same period.

Idea Cellular(IDEA) has the maximum of 2,890,073 mobile subscribers succeeded by Bharti airtel with 2,428,533 mobile subscribers and vodafone(VOD) India adding up 2,186,176 mobile subscribers. On the loosing side, Unitech which recently closedown its operations on several telecom circles due to Supreme Court ruling on 2G case, it lost around 8,348,698 mobile subscribers followed by Aircel loosing 6,98,506 and Tata docomo(TATACOMM) lost 6,92,239 mobile subscribers.  However Bharti Airtel(BHARTIARTL)retained its top position with 21.66% market share succeeded by Vodafone with 17.40% and Reliance communication(RCOM) with 13.92% share followed by Idea Cellular with 13.84%.

After the Supreme court Rule that the subscribers have to port from telecom circles which do not have active spectrum license , the number of MNP requests have increased. Ac cording  to TRAI report, in February alone their was 86.83 million MNP requests to various service providers  from the mobile subscribers to port their mobile number.
