It seems that Google is gearing up the battle over “Modern Messaging System” against Facebook. The recent move of Google sparks the eyes of industry experts who think that such moves, from the Titans of their own industry, are becoming serious threats to the email communication system anonymously. Google is trying to give re-birth to, once dumped, Google Wave – thanks to Apache.
Google Wave, one of the most ambitious project for the company back in 2009, has all capabilities to transform the way of online communication via chat, document sharing, messaging or project management. Just a week before, arch rival of Google, Facebook has also introduced the whole new nuance of email communication – Facebook Email. Post to that, discussion was sparked about possible death of Email communication system among people. The revised thought of re-launch efforts by Google though Apache has given strong support to all those discussion.
However, Google Wave was one of the most hyped projects in 2009. Indeed this real time communication tool had all capabilities to redefine the rule of online communication. Unfortunately, project didn’t got that response from people and Google decided to shut down project few months back.

That was supposed to be end of the story, but after the enormous response to Facebook’s newly launched communication system Google has shifted the gears to re-launch Google Wave with little twist. Company has made a proposal for Apache Software Foundation for Google Wave adoption. Best known for Apache server, company hosts over 100 open source project. Many companies including Google, SAP, Novell and U.S. Navy hopes to add this project as “Apache Wave” to the list.
Proposal highlights three major aspects – migrate codebase from Google to ASF’s infrastructure, to get back to state where development can be re-triggered and to add new committers to the project. However, proposal also highlights the risk associated with this ( Wave didn’t gain sufficient traction at Google) but with a few points like U.S. Navy and other adopters make it a worth project.
Though the Google Wave re-birth efforts are at proposal level – Apache need to accept the same. We are not sure which side Apache will lean but with the strong background of project management, well developed codebase and with reliable committers, we are expecting the project will soon be available for the people to use and freeze the future of email communication methodology.
